2007 Football Prospects

UCLA just finished signing 22 players last Wednesday in the class of 2006, so it's never too early to look to 2007. Here are some of the early prospects that have been recognized as elite, including a few quarterbacks and tailbacks...

By bringing in 22 recruits for the 2006 class, UCLA has only 8 scholarships currently to give to the 2007 class (In fact, UCLA has 86 scholarships earmarked for next season, one over the NCAA-allotted 85).

So, scholarships are tight for the 2007 class.  More than likely, as is always the case, some will open up, but you probably can't expect UCLA to have more than 13-15 by Signing Day, February 2007.

Since UCLA signed 13 linemen in 2006, and missed on a tailback, it's pretty certain that the skill positions will be high priorities, along with linebackers.

UCLA will take a quarterback, a tailback, a tight end, at least one wide receiver and probably a couple a few offensive linemen on the offensive side, and on defense two linebackers, probably a safety and a cornerback, and you can always use a couple of defensive linemen.

Quarterback is a high priority. Ben Olson and Patrick Cowan will both be sophomores next year, and then juniors in the 2007 season, the freshman year of the high school class of 2007. The only other quarterback on the roster is Osaar Rasshan, who would be a redshirt sophomore in 2007.  A quarterback in the 2007 class would come in, probably redshirt his first year in 2007, perhaps sit behind seniors Olson and Cowan in 2008 (if Olson is still at UCLA) as a redshirt freshman, and then compete to start as a redshirt sophomore against Rasshan, who would be a redshirt senior at the time (and whose future at the position is fairly uncertain at this point).  With so few quarterbacks on the roster, the 2007 recruit could also be pushed to play earlier because of the lack of depth or due to injury, or if Olson does perhaps go pro early.

After not signing a true tailback in 2006, the position is a big priority for 2007.  If walk-on Ryen Carew or incoming freshman Christian Ramirez, or even Jeremy McGee, turn out to be legitimate at the position, then UCLA will look quite a bit better at the position in the next couple of seasons. But not only in a couple of years will UCLA be lacking depth at the position, there is need for a big-time talent.

Prospects that have been recognized as top priorities for UCLA and/or elite talents are designated with a *.
