UCLA Recruits Michigan Safety

UCLA doesn't get out to Michigan on the recruiting trail much, but with a connection to the area from a new assistant coach, the Bruins are involved with Derek Knight, the 6-0, 190-pound safety prospect with Big Ten scholarship offers...

It's been a while since UCLA recruited in the state of Michigan, but the presence of new linebackers coach Chuck Bullough has led them to his former stomping grounds.

Bullough is recruiting Detroit (Mich.) Renaissance safety Derek Knight (6-0, 190), who has a verbal scholarship offer from the Bruin staff.

"I'm really feeling UCLA right now," said Knight. "Coach Bullough is recruiting me and he's supposed to be coming to the school in May. I'm open to leaving the state right now, and the weather in California is beautiful."

The Bruins aren't the only school out west recruiting Knight, as Arizona State has also offered the 6-0, 190-pound safety.

"Most of the schools I heard from were from the Midwest, but then UCLA and Arizona State started to recruit me so I'm looking at both of them," Knight said.

Knight, who attended the U.S. Army All-American Combine and will be at the Nike Camp in Columbus next week, also has offers from Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Minnesota, Indiana, Toledo and Miami (Ohio).

"I just took an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech and Indiana and I was at Michigan State last weekend," said Knight. "I'm hoping to take an unofficial visit out to UCLA and Arizona State, but I don't know if that can happen."

During his junior season, Knight had 128 tackles, 11 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions. On offense, Knight rushed for 540 yards on 54 carries.

Slated to play safety again this fall, Knight said if he continues to grow, he could end up closer to the line of scrimmage.

"I might end up playing outside linebacker if I keep growing," Knight said. "I need to put on some more weight for that to happen though."

Knight said he was on target to academically qualify easily.
