UCLA freshman linebacker John Hale and freshman defensive tackle Jess Ward earlier today reported to officials at San Bernardino County Superior Court in connection with an altercation that occurred in February.
The incident occurred between guests at the home of Ward's parents. The next day, all present during the altercation were questioned. Hale and Ward were not detained and two other men were arrested.
Warrants for the arrest of Hale and Ward were issued on Wednesday. The two players immediately made arrangements to report to court on Thursday. Both entered pleas of not guilty to a felony complaint of assault and were released on their own recognizance.
"We are aware of the circumstances that occurred in Jess' parents' home," said head coach Karl Dorrell. "John and Jess called me the day after the incident and told me what happened.
"It appears that John and Jess were not involved in the altercation other than trying to move it out of the house. Based on the information available to us, we have decided to wait until the outcome of the legal process to impose any disciplinary action."
