UCLA sophomore linebacker John Hale and freshman defensive tackle Jess Ward earlier today (Tuesday) entered a plea of no contest on one count of misdemeanor assault in San Bernardino County Superior Court in connection with an altercation that occurred in February at the home of Ward's parents.
Hale and Ward were both fined $130 and placed on informal probation.
"Now that the legal proceedings have concluded, I will meet with John and Jess and then decide on the appropriate disciplinary action," said UCLA head football coach Karl Dorrell.
Editor's Note: UCLA football's team policy allows for players to participate if a charge is only a misdemeanor. It's anticipated that both players will participate in fall camp, and, as Dorrell comments here, will receive some disciplinary action. Sources indicated Tuesday that, more than likely, both players will be suspended for the season's opener against Utah September 2nd.
Hale was expected to be the starting SAM linebacker this season. Korey Bosworth, a redshirt freshman with no game experience, is currently listed as the backup at the strongside position.
