California Pre-Season Rankings: TEs & WRs

A UCLA commitment, the 6-5, 240-pound Nate Chandler, tops the list of tight ends, while a number of UCLA prospects dot the wide receiver list. In fact, Chandler's high school, San Diego Mira Mesa, also boasts the #1 receiver in the state...

TIGHT ENDS:

While California lacks that "star" at tight end that it's had in years past (like a Konrad Reuland or Marcedes Lewis), it's plenty talented at the top. Chandler can both block and catch while Irby is the most versatile prospect at this position. Mahina could also play defensive end. Ellison has good size and good hands while Brooks may be the best receiver of any of this group.

1. Nate Chandler, 6-6, 225, San Diego (Calif.) Mira Mesa
Committed to: UCLA
Gives the Bruins their top tight end prospect since Lewis signed in 2002.

2. Blaine Irby, 6-3, 235, Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure
Committed to: Texas
Lacks ideal tight end size but makes up for it in hands, speed and ability to make the catch.

3. Devin Mahina, 6-6, 225, 4.7, Upland (Calif.)
Has the size and continues to get better at catching passes.

4. Rhett Ellison, 6-5, 235, Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis
Committed to: Virginia Tech
The son of former USC and 49ers linebacker Riki Ellison heads east to play.

5. Eric Brooks, 6-2, 240, Monrovia (Calif.)
Not as big as most tight ends but has arguably the best hands of any in the state.

6. Mikhail Marinovich, 6-5.5, 225, San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) Junipero Serra
Physically is as impressive as any prospect, can catch, run and block.

7. Alexander Inda, 6-3, 245, Panorama City (Calif.) St. Genevieve
Led all tight ends in California in receiving as a junior.

8. Dallin Rogers, 6-4, 210, El Dorado (Calif.) Union Mine
Committed to: Utah
Gave Utes verbal but will take mission, letting him add more weight.

9. Ryan Skidmore, 6-5, 225, East (Calif.) Bakersfield
Also being recruited for the defensive side of the ball.

10. Trent Brown, 6-4, 210, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco
Needs to add more weight but can catch the ball and run.

RECEIVERS:

Like the tight ends, there is no one star here, like a David Ausberry, Steve Smith or DeSean Jackson, but top to bottom, there is a lot of depth. Simas joins teammate Chandler to give Mira Mesa the best tight end and receiver in the state. Boyles is as flamboyant as he is talented. Babb has speed in his genes and runs great routes. Dunn might be the fastest receiver in the group. Calvin has excellent hands and athleticism and Carr and Lagemann have ideal receiver size.

1. Markques Simas, 6-2, 200, San Diego (Calif.) Mira Mesa
Not flashy, but is a workhorse and always makes the tough catch.

2. Anthony Boyles, 6-3, 195, Gardena (Calif.) Serra
On the other hand, Boyles is as flashy as they come and no one enjoys matching up with cornerbacks more.

3. Zion Babb, 6-2, 180, Alhambra (Calif.)
Impossible to jam the line of scrimmage. Father was an All-American track star at USC.

4. Reggie Dunn, 5-9, 175, Los Angeles (Calif.) Verbum Dei
Ran a 4.28 at USC's camp and a 4.3 at the Scout.com Combine.

5. Mike Calvin, 6-2, 185, San Lorenzo (Calif.)
Good strength and continues to improve at the position.

6. Russell Carr, 6-3, 192, Chino (Calif.) Don Lugo
Could eventually move to safety but is a nice, physical receiver.

7. Alex Lagemann, 6-3, 206, Saratoga (Calif.)
Committed to: California
Good size, great hands and runs crisp routes.

8. Ryan Kessman, 6-0, 190, San Jacinto (Calif.)
An excellent down-field threat he also has elusive speed.

9. Sean Wiser, 6-2, 180, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian
Continues to be Jimmy Clausen's favorite target.

10. David Roberts, 6-1, 175, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.)
Committed to: Arizona
At either receiver or safety, Roberts will make an impact with the Wildcats.
