Eric McNeal, the senior linebacker, is out for the Utah game because of an academic issue, according to sources.

Reggie Carter, the redshirt freshman, was slated to start, and now redshirt freshman Shawn Oatis will be the first back-up.

Once school starts, UCLA will have a few more players walk on to the program. Steven Urrutia, the 6-3, 290-pound defensive tackle who was on the squad last season, will return. We've also heard that a defensive end named Thomas Blake, a transfer from UC Davis, will be on the roster. Blake's UC Davis Bio. He looked bigger than 234 pounds when seen at practice.

Another UC Davis transfer, a linebacker named Josh Edwards, is expected to join the team. Edwards, who is 6-0 and 225, had five starts for Davis last season as a sophomore.
