Edison Has a Great Deal to Consider

The 6-4, 225-pound defensive end prospect from Los Angeles Verbum Dei, Justin Edison, has really seen his recruitment heat up recently, with a flurry of scholarship offers and official visits, including one to UCLA last weekend. Already verbally committed to Oregon State, Edison talked to us about his decision-making process...

Los Angeles (Calif.) Verbum Dei defensive end Justin Edison has gone from no scholarship offers midway through the 2006 season to a Pac-10 commit with even more offers from that conference.

So what once looked like a recruitment that was over when he committed to Oregon State in mid-December has further been muddled by a recent flurry of offers for the fast-rising prospect.

"Cal was here for an in-home visit (Tuesday night) and they said that they have a scholarship for me and they firmed up that offer with me," said Edison. "It may be a grayshirt option, but I don't know what it will be for a while."

Earlier Tuesday, Edison picked up another Pac-10 offer and it will also allow him to take another official visit. "Coach Tuiasosopo and Coach Stoops from Arizona came by the school and offered me in writing when they were there to see Reggie (Dunn)," said Edison. "Me and Reggie are going to take an official visit there this weekend."

And over the past weekend, Edison was given a verbal offer from UCLA, though it came with a caveat. "UCLA has one scholarship left and they're waiting on Donovan Warren to decide," said Edison. "They said they would call me as soon as he announced so I'll know more this week."

On his visit, Edison was hosted by defensive tackle Kevin Brown, a player that Edison is very familiar with. Brown's older brother Owen is the defensive line coach at Verbum Dei. "When I went to UCLA this past weekend, I really liked the players and I really liked my position coach, Todd Howard. I also liked Coach Doc (Kreis), the strength and conditioning coach. They also have good academic support there," said Edison. "I hit it off with the players, they're all real cool guys. Kevin talked with me about Coach Walker and Coach Dorrell and how they are to play for. It was cool."

Dorrell met with Edison last week in an in-home visit and Walker is scheduled to come by this week.

Edison's defensive mate for the Eagles, Akeem Ayers, has already verballed to UCLA and Edison said Ayers is doing his part to reunite them in college. "Akeem is kind of recruiting me and he's trying to talk to me to get me to go there, but it can't be done until I get an offer," said Edison.

So with all of these options, where does Edison stand? "Right now I'm a solid commit to Oregon State, but I'll wait until Signing Day for my final decision," said Edison. "I still have a high opinion of Cal, their academics are unquestionable. UCLA is close by but they haven't offered me so that could change. I don't know what I'll do."

Edison said he would be an easy academic qualifier.
