Scouting Guide For the Weekend

Just a few days after the Final Four we're back on the road for the April basketballe evaluation perod, as our college coaches. Here's a quick look at the recruits UCLA will be watching in AAU events in Arkansas and Las Vegas this weekend, including Jrue Holiday, and UCLA-committed guards Jerime Anderson and Malcolm Lee...

Here we go again. Just a few days after the Final Four, we're back on the road for basketball recruiting.

The evaluation period begins Saturday for basketball, and here's a quick primer on who you should be watching in terms of UCLA prospects.

First, and most significantly, UCLA assistant Kerry Keating could be the leading candidate for the head coaching job at Long Beach State.  Keating is one of the best recruiting assistants in the country, and his departure would create a sizeable hole in UCLA's recruiting efforts.  If he did leave, we truly don't have a bead on who could be a leading candidate to replace Keating, but it'd demand a crack recruiter.

This weekend, Head Coach  Ben Howland will be in Fayetteville, Arkansas, along with assistant Donnie Daniels,  for the Real Deal on the Hill. To our knowledge, Keating or assistant Scott Garson will be in Las Vegas for the Vegas Easter Classic.

We'll be in Vegas, too.

Howland will be in Arkansas because mostly the Pump N Run team will be participating in the Real Deal, a team stocked with UCLA prospects. In Arkansas are:

Jerime Anderson, 6-1 JR PG, Anaheim (Calif.) Canyon, Committed to UCLA. Pumps

Jrue Holiday, 6-3 JR SG, North Hollywood (Calif.) Campbell Hall. Pumps

Larry Drew, 5-11 JR PG, Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft. Pumps

Travis Wear, 6-9 SO PF, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei. Pumps

David Wear, 6-9 SO PF, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei Pumps

Reeves Nelson, 6-6 SO SF, Modesto (Calif.) Christian, Pumps

Renardo Sidney, 6-9 SO C, Lakewood (Calif.) Artesia. L.A. Dream

DeMar Derozan, 6-5 JR SF, Compton (Calif.) High, L.A. Dream

Jordan Hamilton, 6-6 SO SF, Los Angeles (Calif.) Dorsey, I-Can All-Stars

Chase Tapley, 6-1 SO CG, Sacramento (Calif.) High, Pumps #2.

In Vegas:

Malcolm Lee, 6-4 JR CG, Riverside (Calif.) North. Committed to UCLA.  Inland.

Michael Snaer, 6-4 SO SG, Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde. Inland.

Brendan Lavender, 6-4 JR SG, Mesa (Ariz.) Mountain View. Arizona Magic.

Elijah Johnson, 6-1 SO PG, Las Vegas (Nev.) Cheyenne. Houston Hoops.

Colin Borchert, 6-8 SO PF, Glendale (Ariz.) Mountain Ridge. Southwest Rebels Elite.

Anthony Marshall, 6-2 SO SG, Las Vegas (Nev.) Mojave. Las Vegas Prospects

Robert Smith, 5-10 SO PG, Perris (Calif.) High. FBC Perris

Drew Gordon, the 6-8 post from San Jose (Calif.) Bishop Mitty, plays with the Oakland Soldiers, and they're not participating in a tournament this weekend. They'll be in Houston for the Kingwood Classic April 20-22, and in Las Vegas April 27-29.  Also on that team is Jared Cunningham, 6-1 SO CG, San Leandro (Calif.) High, and Tim Harris, 6-3 SO SG, San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian, two of the best sophomore guards in the west.

UCLA coaches will use this April period to recognize any recruits from outside the west that could be UCLA prospects, obviously. One to watch could be Romero Osby, the 6-8, 230-pound junior post from Meridian (Louisiana) Northeast Lauderdale, the #16th-ranked player by in the class of 2008.
