Terms are still being finalized, but sources have indicated the deal is done.
Keating was offered both the Long Beach State and Santa Clara head coaching jobs Wednesday night, but took the night to make a decision. Sources believed he'd take the Long Beach State job, but Thursday Keating decided to take the Santa Clara position.
It was believed that since Santa Clara plays in the WCC, a better conference (LBSU plays in the Big West), that the position at Santa Clara paid more, and LBSU's impending NCAA sanctions were factors in the decision.
Keating will be in Las Vegas this weekend for the Easter Classic AAU tournament, wearing Santa Clara gear, out on his first evaluation period as a head coach.
UCLA's Ben Howland will now try to find a replacement for Keating, which will undoubtedly have to be a very good recruiting assistant. Among sources close to the situation, there were no obvious candidates for the job. It's believed that Howland will look nationally for a top recruiting assistant.
