D-Tackle Will Wait Out UCLA

Ottis Jones, the defensive tackle prospect, has a Leuzinger High teammate already committed to UCLA in linebacker Uona Kaveinga, and the 6-1, 254-pounder makes it pretty clear about what he'd do if the Bruins made it two scholarship offers to Leuzinger football prospects for the class of 2008...

UCLA already has one commitment from a Lawndale (Calif.) Leuzinger prospect, getting a verbal from linebacker Uona Kaveinga back in March.

And if he has his way, defensive tackle Ottis Jones (6-1, 254) will be joining Kaveinga in Westwood.

"My favorite is UCLA," said Jones. "If they offered, I'd commit right on the spot."

Jones was a frequent guest at UCLA spring practices and he had no hesitation in saying that the Bruins are the team to beat. "I'd be willing to wait it out for as long as I need, but that's the one I'm waiting for," said Jones.

UCLA isn't the only school recruiting Jones, though. "Washington State, Arizona State, Arizona, Fresno State and San Jose State have all been talking with me," said Jones, who also had Washington, Oregon, USC and Navy come by the school on Wednesday.

Jones played primarily on the offensive side of the ball last year for Leuzinger but most schools envision him playing on the defensive line. "Schools like me as a defensive tackle," said Jones. "I could play guard or center but my heart is on defense."

Jones was at the Scout Combine last weekend and made the all-combine second team (which will be released today). Taking in several reps, Jones was pretty happy with his performance. "Overall I did good," said Jones. "I won a bunch of my reps and I think I held my own."

Jones said he clocked his forty in 5.0, the shuttle in 4.6 and the L-cone in 7.7, which are good times for a lineman.

He plans to attend UCLA's 1-Day Camp and summer camp as well as Arizona's camp and potentially USC's Linemen Camp.

Academically, Jones has a 2.8 GPA and will take the SAT on June 2.
