Comments from Drew Gordon

Drew Gordon, the 6-9, 225-pound post from San Jose (Calif.) Archbishop Mitty, who is the #20-ranked player in the nation for 2008, talked about why he chose UCLA in a teleconference call yesterday, discussing UCLA's Final Fours and Head Coach Ben Howland as factors...

On what made him choose UCLA over the other schools:

"All the schools were great schools, all the coaches were excellent coaches. UCLA and its staff would be the best fit for me at this point in time to be able to further my career beyond college. Basically, that's what it came down to."

On what stood out about UCLA:

"UCLA has been to the Final Four two straight years. That's saying something automatically. Ben Howland's coaching style, his personality, just sets you up for greatness, I guess. Just seeing the people that are coming into the program and the people that are leaving the program really assures me that I'm going to be able to be coached by a good coach who is willing to get me out and to the next step."

On picking a school that fits his style of play:

"I had to think about that, about the style of play. But what it comes down to is you have to be an all-around good player. You have to be able to pick up the pace and slow down the pace and in this case, with UCLA, it's going to be slow down the pace a little bit. I'm just going to learn and get better at slowing myself down and focusing on defense as opposed to run and gun. It's just going to take some getting used to."
