Pac-10 Watches NorCal LB/FB

Pleasanton (Calif.) Foothill linebacker Rob Andrews (6-2, 208) was one of the standouts at the San Francisco Combine and, after an all-state underclass performance in 2006, he's hoping to turn that in to more scholarship offers.

"My only offer is from San Diego State," said Andrews. "But I hear from California, UCLA, Oregon, Arizona, UNLV, Fresno State and USC. Some are recruiting me as a fullback but more are recruiting me as a linebacker."

Andrews earned attention as a linebacker last fall, but he also was a decorated running back, which makes fullback an option for him in college. His preference is on the defensive side of the ball.

"Usually, they want a bigger linebacker with bigger size, so I would say middle linebacker is where I want to play, but I can play wherever they want me," said Andrews. "I like both of those positions. I do like offense a lot. On offense you always know where to go, but linebacker, it's more instinctive. And I'd be happy to hit."

Andrews said that Cal and UCLA have been actively recruiting him and those are two of his top schools, along with Oregon and San Diego State, but that he's open to anything, especially programs on the West Coast.

Andrews said: "Any Pac-10 school, like Cal or UCLA, I'd really like to get a chance. I'm going to Cal's camp and probably the San Diego State camp and maybe UCLA's. I'm not in any hurry to decide though."

He did acknowledge, though, that the Bears are his favorite school and he's got ties to Cal. "I'm a Cal fan, I grew up watching them," said Andrews. "My sister is a junior there and it would be cool to play there. If they offered, I don't know if I'd commit right away, but I like them a lot. A lot of schools don't give out too many offers early, so I'm giving it some time."

Andrews said that even if offers started pouring in, he doesn't plan to decide until after he's had a chance to see the schools. "I want to wait and take some official trips before I commit anywhere," said Andrews. Last fall, Andrews had 104 tackles, eight sacks and forced four fumbles on defense, earning all-state underclass honors. From his fullback spot, he ran for 750 yards on 145 carries and scored 17 touchdowns, including a 78-yarder. He also earned all-Combine honors at the San Francisco Combine.

Academically, Andrews has a 2.8 GPA and took the SAT last Saturday.
