Daniel Orton, the 6-9 junior center from Oklahoma City (Okla.) Bishop McGuinness, has worked himself in to an elite high-major prospect for the class of 2009.

Orton, who weighs a good 250 pounds, has slimmed down and gotten in very good shape. His weight had been a concern before, but he's put in work to improve his body, and it's paid off. He's also worked on his game; He's always been a good inside banger and rebounder, but he's starting more and more to show a low-post game and touch around the basket.

That combination, of a very good body and developing skills, has gotten him ranked as the #15 player in the 2009 class national by Scout.com. And he's hearing from just about every major program across the country.

Orton rattled off a long list of schools he said he was interested in: "It's really a wide variety of schools right now: Connecticut, Oklahoma, Florida, Syracuse, Maryland, Texas, Texas A&M, Kansas, Arkansas, UCLA, Arizona...and more."

When asked what schools he'd like to visit officially, though, he said, "Probably UCLA, Arizona, Maryland, Connecticut and probably Syracuse."

But he wanted to emphasize that he is still wide open.

With two schools from the west – UCLA and Arizona – on his favorites list, it was natural to wonder what the connection was. Orton said, "I sometimes play on the (AAU team) Compton Magic and I'm close with their coach. Playing for them, I got introduced to the UCLA coaches."

Orton, a well-spoken kid, said he currently has a 2.8 GPA. "I didn't do as well as I can in my second semester," Orton said. "So I have a 2.8. My first semester I had a 3.5 and I'm going to work to get it back up to that."
