Hoops Recruiting Options

UCLA basketball has two scholarships still left to give for the 2003-2004 season and still has some options...

There are currently two scholarships available to give for the 2003-2004 season. Andre Patterson's scholarship is being saved for him.

Without any point guard prospects good enough for UCLA to target that are available, UCLA is looking for a wing and frontcourt player.

That frontcourt player would be Sean Phaler, 6-9 PF, Villa Park. It's between UCLA and Washington for him. He'll trip to both this month. The word is that the kid himself prefers UCLA.

For the wing, Trevor Ariza, 6-7 SF, Los Angeles Westchester, is the target. Ariza tripped officially to Georgia this last weekend. He's also been to UNLV and Indiana. He has a trip scheduled for Florida next weekend and then, reportedly, will trip to UCLA. The UCLA trip is not scheduled yet.

A backup plan is Harvey Thomas, 6-8 SF/PF, Northeast Oklahoma JC. Thomas was a top 75 player nationally out of high school and went to Georgetown last year. He wasn't eligible at the beginning of last season (I don't know if it was academically-related), had a conflict with Georgetown's coaching staff and opted to go to Northeast this season. It's uncertain whether he'll actually play at the JC this year. If he doesn't, and completes his AA degree, he'd have four years to play three I believe. If he does play, he'd have three years to play two. Thomas is more of a small forward, and likes to shoot from the outside quite a bit.

UCLA could also sniff around Devon Evertsen, 6-5 SR SF, Phoenix (Ariz.) Moon Valley, if all of the other above options fall through.

A side note on scholarships: John Hoffart, the 6-9 walkon center, has been given a scholarship for this upcoming season.
