With fires having raged throughout the Southland this week, several games around the region have been cancelled, postponed or moved. Other games are expected to be played this weekend, though several schools have made a Friday afternoon deadline on deciding whether or not they would be playing on Friday.
Game of the Week: Huntington Beach Edison at Esperanza
This game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but has since been moved to Monday. Nick Crissman, UCLA's committed quarterback, is coming off his best performance of the year against Marina, but Esperanza is unbeaten and leads the Sunset League. A win here for the Chargers gets them back in the Sunset League race, though they'll need Esperanza to beat Los Alamitos down the line to take a share of the title.
Valencia at Hart
In the lone game featuring future Bruins on both sides of the ball, Valencia visits undefeated Hart in a key Foothill League game for the Vikings. Hart has a leg up on the league title, thanks to a thrilling win over Canyon, but still must face Saugus. Though the Foothill League is the strongest league in the CIF-Northern Division and would likely get an at-large berth, Valencia would like to win to keep their automatic berth chances alive. Led by UCLA commit Marlon Pollard on defense and Graham Wilbert on offense, the Vikings will have their work cut out for them against B.R. Holbrook, Delano Howell and Bruin commit Patrick Larimore.
Katy Cinco Ranch at Katy (10/27)
The top ranked team in Texas, Katy, led by UCLA commit Aundre Dean, hosts crosstown rival Katy Cinco Ranch, who at 3-1, has a shot at the District Title. Katy has been perfect in 2007 and rarely been tested. Bruin fans can get their first look at Dean as the game will be televised on FSN Southwest (643 on DirecTV) at 9 a.m.
Santa Monica at Culver City
The Vikings will try to keep their Ocean League title hopes alive when they visit Culver City. Led by Oregon State commit Ryan Katz, the Vikings will try to derail the unbeaten Centaurs season. Last week, SaMo dropped a close one to Beverly Hills, but a win over Culver City, and a subsequent win by the Centaurs over Beverly Hills could make a three-way tie for the league title. UCLA commit Antwon Moutra and three-star quarterback Darius Banks are continuing their connection in the passing game, and Moutra is having an all-state season on both sides of the ball for the Centaurs.
Arcadia at Muir
The de facto Pacific League title game sees unbeaten Arcadia visit Muir, who hasn't lost a league game yet this season. Muir has an excellent secondary, led by Marcus Thompson and Eugene Daniels, while the Apaches counter with two-way threats Kevan Walker, a UCLA commit who is playing both quarterback and safety as well as junior stud Todd Golper, who doubles as a tight end and linebacker.
Chino Hills at Ayala
A stunning loss to Glendora last week hurt Chino Hills' chance at the Sierra League title, but they can get back in the race with a win over crosstown foe Ayala. The Bulldogs are led by quarterback Matt Baca, who threw two touchdown passes in the final 30 seconds last week to beat Damien while the Huskies are paced by UCLA commit Cory Harkey, who's been dominant on both sides of the ball.
Compton at Millikan
The Tarbabes face their final tuneup before their much-anticipated showdown with Long Beach Poly next weekend. Through seven games, Compton has given up only 61 points and their stingy defense, led by UCLA commit Datone Jones has kept opponents to eight points or less five times. Millikan started the year out 5-0, but lost their first two Moore League games to Poly and Lakewood.
