UCLA opens the season with its first exhibition game tonight at Pauley Pavilion, at 7:30, against Azusa Pacific.

It's a match-up of two top-10-ranked teams.  UCLA is ranked #2 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll of Division 1 college teams. Azusa Pacific is ranked #8 in the NAIA Coaches Pre-Season Poll.

Despite the ranking, APU is in a re-building year, having lost all five starters from last season when they went 29-7, with only six players returning from last year's roster.

Center David Burgess could play at a D-1 school, and was in fact scouted by UCLA for a while before he signed with BYU out of high school and then transferred to Gonzaga.  Davon Roberts is another Division 1 transfer, from Sacramento State, a 6-5 wing.  They combine with two returnees from last season, the sharp-shooting, 6-2 guard, Mike Danielian and 6-7 Todd Martin, who is also a good shooter. Danielian is the top returning scorer from a year ago when he averaged 8.9 points per game.

APU is coached by first-year coach, 29-year old Justin Leslie, a former player at APU.  He replaced his old coach, Bill Odell, who retired afte 39 years coaching, and 16 at APU.

APU's alloted tickets for tonight's game sold out in 22 minutes.
