Bruin Recruit Preview: Week 9

Several schools featuring UCLA commits are playing for league titles or playoff spots, with the biggest game happening in Compton tonight when the Tarbabes host Long Beach Poly...

The schedule returns to normal this week after the Southland fires forced the cancellation of several games. With one week left in the regular season in Southern California, there aren't many big games tonight, except for a huge clash in the Moore League, but playoff berths are being played for.

Game of the Week: Long Beach Poly at Compton
The Jackrabbits haven't lost a Moore League game in over a decade, but they will face one of their stiffest tests ever when they visit Compton tonight for what will effectively be for the league title. The Jackrabbits have only lost to Birmingham while the Tarbabes are unbeaten, yet will face their toughest opponent this season in Poly. Compton is led by UCLA commit Datone Jones, who will face a tough offensive line for Poly, and running back Donald Green while Poly is paced by two studs in Vaughn Telemaque and Jurrell Casey.

Huntington Beach Edison at Fountain Valley
The Chargers got right back into the Sunset League title chase with a win over Esperanza last week and a loss by Los Alamitos. Tonight they face the Barons for the "Battle of the Bell", but more importantly, the chance to keep pace for the league title. UCLA commit Nick Crissman has been heating up after being healthy for the first time all year, and he'll need another big night tonight against a good Barons defense.

El Camino at Fallbrook
After having their game last week cancelled because of the fire, El Camino returns to the field with a chance to win the Avocado League still in their sights. They'll need to beat Fallbrook tonight and then Oceanside next week to force a tie, but are favored tonight. UCLA's committed receiver Nelson Rosario is coming off his best game of the year, a five-catch, 189-yard performance against Carlsbad two weeks ago.

Arroyo Valley at Colton
The San Andreas League title is on the line tonight when Colton hosts Arroyo Valley in a matchup of the two lone first place teams. The Hawks are led by quarterback Robert Fuller, one of the best passers in the Inland Empire while the Yellowjackets are loaded with BYU commit Daniel Sorensen and UCLA commit Damien Holmes, one of the best two-way players in the country.

Mission Viejo at Capistrano Valley
This used to be one of the best rivalries in South Orange County, but its been one-sided of late. The Diablos will continue to diversify their offense, which features the arm of elite junior Allan Bridgford and the vaunted running game, spearheaded by an offensive line which features UCLA commit Jeff Baca. The Diablos need a win here to keep their South Coast League title hopes alive, which they'll have a chance to clinch next week when they face Tesoro.

Cleveland at Birmingham
The Patriots will look to keep their West Valley League showdown with Taft a battle of unbeatens, and face a struggling Cleveland squad. Milton Knox has broken two of the most stories records in City Section history: career touchdowns and career rushing yards, and will look to keep adding to those numbers as the Patriots prepare for a City Section title run. Donovan Carter, UCLA's committed linebacker leads a Patriot defense that has given up 18 points in their last four games, and has pitched consecutive shutouts.

Crespi at Loyola
Crespi has had their sights set on the Serra League title and next week they'll face Notre Dame for the league title, assuming they beat Loyola tomorrow night. The Cubs have faced one of the most difficult schedules in the region and are beat up while the Celts defense, led by E.J. Woods, UCLA's committed safety, has given up five points in the last two games, and four times this year, has kept teams to under nine points.

Troy at Fullerton
The Warriors can keep their slim Freeway League title hopes alive with a win over Fullerton tonight. Derrick Coleman, UCLA's committed running back, is well-rested and will be the focal point of the Warriors offense tonight.
