The final weekend of the regular season has a couple of games that involve UCLA commits and league championships, including a huge clash in the City between two long-time rivals.
Game of the Week: Birmingham at Taft
Taft has won seven of its last eight and comes in unbeaten in West Valley League play. Birmingham has won eight in a row and is unblemished as well in league competition. Something will have to give. The Toreadors are led by Washington commit Craig Noble and Jarrell Holland. Birmingham is paced by UCLA commits Milton Knox and Donovan Carter. Knox owns the major L.A. rushing records while Carter heads a stout Patriots defense that has pitched three straight shutouts. The winner gets the top seed from the West Valley League, though for the Patriots, it would also be the top seed in the City Section playoffs and keep their realistic chances for the California D-I State Bowl berth alive.
Saugus at Hart
The Indians were dealt a crushing blow earlier this week when linebacker Patrick Larimore, a commit to UCLA, was ruled out for the remainder of the season after a major thumb injury. Larimore sought a second opinion and was told he would be sidelined for the season. So the Indians will need Stanford-bound running back Delano Howell to raise his level that much more. Saugus has been a surprise this year, losing only by three to Notre Dame HS, and the winner here would earn the Foothill League title. Junior running back Ryan Zirbel leads the Centurions on offense.
Oceanside at El Camino
Oceanside has clinched at least a share of the Avocado League title and the Pirates, led by junior quarterback Jordan Wynn, aspire for a high seed in the CIF-SD playoffs. The Wildcats, led by UCLA commit Nelson Rosario, need a win to clinch a playoff spot out of the Avocado League.
Culver City at Beverly Hills
The Ocean League title is at stake between the Centaurs and Normans. Culver City is playing for a potential top in the CIF-Western Division, and a win here would all but wrap that up and could set up down the line, a matchup with Dominguez of Compton. Of all of UCLA's commits, few are having the season that Antwon Moutra has been having, Moutra dominating on both sides of the ball. Beverly Hills, though, can throw a huge wrench into the plans and win the Ocean League title with a win.
Crespi at Notre Dame
The Celts have aimed for this game all year long, and can win the Serra League title and get a good seed for the playoffs with a win over the Knights. Notre Dame on the other hand is trying to keep their Division II state bowl berth hopes alive, and their loss to Birmingham is looking better each week (if a loss can look good). The Serra League title is at stake, with E.J. Woods, a UCLA commit and Notre Dame verbal Joseph Fauria leading the Celts against Fauria's future Irish teammates, Anthony McDonald and Dayne Crist.
Tesoro at Mission Viejo
These two teams will battle for the South Coast League title and a first round home game for the Pac-5 playoffs. Tesoro has yet to lose a league game after struggling in non-league play. The Diablos have hit their stride and UCLA commit Jeff Baca has played as well if not better than any of UCLA's committed offensive lineman and he'd like to get the Diablos another league title.
Leuzinger at West Torrance
Here is how important this Bay League game is. Leuzinger could lose and miss the playoffs entirely, or win and earn a share of the league title. After a crippling two-game losing streak, the Olympians and UCLA-commit Uona Kaveinga righted the ship against Mira Costa, but will need to beat a tough West team, who started out 5-0-1 before their own two-game losing streal.
Lancaster at Palmdale
Palmdale, who boasts UCLA commit Connor Bradford on the offensive line, has clinched at least a tie for the Golden League title. They're keeping their hopes alive for a top seed in the Western Division, but would need some help, and need to beat Lancaster, who is hoping to force a three-way tie for the Golden League title as well.
Venice at Fairfax
The Gondoliers visit the Colonials for a game that will decide the Western League title. Venice has already clinched a tie and is playing for seeding in the City Section playoffs, led by USC commit Curtis McNeal at running back, and UCLA commit Jerry Johnson at receiver. Fairfax is paced by defensive end Courtney Campbell, a D-I recruit, and a win would tie them for the league title and get them the top seed out of the Western League.
