December is approaching and once again Katy High School (TX) is still playing football deep into the Texas high school 5A playoffs. A big part of Katy's success is 6-foot-1, 205-pound blue chip running back Aundre Dean who has scored four touchdowns and rushed for a combined 300+ yards the past two weeks to help Katy advance to Saturday's showdown with Pasadena Memorial at Rice Stadium.
"We are playing the way we should. We have high standards at Katy and everybody is doing their job right now," Dean said. "The guys up-front are blocking. We're running and passing the ball like we should. Our defense is stopping our opponents like they should. We're playing well right now."
With a deep run in the playoffs, Dean has not had time to focus on the recruiting process. A one-time Texas A&M commit early in the process, Dean switched his commitment to UCLA after a visit to California last summer. However, given the coaching uncertainty with the Bruins right now, it appears the Scout.com four-star running back is opening things back up and is no longer committed.
"I liked it out there when I visited and I got caught up in the moment and committed," Dean said. "And with the coaching situation now, I don't think I'll be going there."
Now that he's open, will the Katy native take another look at the first school that he committed to back in the spring, especially given the new coaching staff that's being assembled at Texas A&M?
"I don't think so. It doesn't really matter to me. The school just isn't a fit for me," Dean said. "I know Martellus Bennett and some of their players over there. I like those guys, but I doubt that I take an official visit there unless something significantly changes."
So where do things stand in his recruiting process?
"Well, I haven't had a chance to narrow my schools down to my five visits because I'm focused on the team and playoffs," Dean said. "But I'm hearing from schools like Arizona State, Iowa, and Arkansas. Coach Rucker at Texas said he's going to come watch me this weekend and they are taking a look."
So is Dean interested in the Longhorns?
"I don't know. They haven't offered me and they really haven't recruited me until now," Dean said. "I have mixed feelings about it. It's a good program that I'm familiar with, but other schools have been recruiting me from day one and I know I'm a top priority for them."
