Los Angeles (Calif.) Dorsey running back/safety Johnathan Franklin, who committed to UCLA last March, took an official visit to another UC school this weekend, visiting Cal, and when he left, he owned an offer from the Bears staff.

"They offered me this weekend as a safety or corner," said Franklin. "Basically they want me to play DB for them. Coach (Al) Simmons was recruiting me at Arizona State and when he went to Cal, they recruited me. I talked with him, Coach (Ron) Gould and Coach (Jeff) Tedford and they offered me."

Franklin said the offer was exciting to receive, and it helps with Cal's surge.

"I'm still a soft commit to UCLA, but this scored a lot of points for Cal," said Franklin. "I'm going to take my visit to Arizona State this weekend and after my trip, I'm going to make a list of the do's and don'ts about each school and make my final decision then."

Franklin was hosted by Eddie Young, though he was hoping to see his former Dorsey teammates Robert Mullins and Keith Browner, both at Cal, on the visit.

"Unfortunately, they were out of town so I didn't get to see them. But Eddie was a real cool guy. I met a lot of other players and they were all really nice. But I know that when Robert or Keith talk to me, they'll be in my ear."

Franklin said that he's trying to keep an open mind about the process.

"Like I said before, I'm no longer looking at just the coaching situation when I decide. I'm looking at the place that fits me the best and the college I can get the most out of. It's been great to get offered by two prestigious academic schools like UCLA and Cal."

Franklin said that he hopes to know within days after his visit to Tempe.

"I'll know then after I talk with my family and lay it all out," said Franklin.
