Drew Gordon, the 6-9 senior post from San Jose (Calif.) Archbishop Mitty who signed with UCLA in November, was believed to be out for the season after breaking a bone in his foot over a month ago.
But Gordon surprised everyone when he checked into Mitty's state playoff game Wednesday. He played about 9 minutes, had 12 points, three rebounds, a steal and two dunks, and helped Mitty to a 71-51 victory over Redding Shasta in the Division II state playoff first round.
Here's an exerpt from the San Jose Mercury News about Gordon's recovery:
"Gordon was not tentative, leaping high to block shots and dunk the ball, while providing his typical game-changing presence on defense.
He was sore after the game, but the ice was wrapped around his calf muscles, not his left foot, which broke in two places during a game at Archbishop Riordan on Jan. 18.
Only a few days ago, a return did not seem possible. Gordon spent a month in a cast, and then three weeks ago an X-ray showed a dark crack in the bone. Gordon feared surgery would be required, perhaps setting him back another four to six weeks.
But the X-ray also spurred him to try even harder during rehabilitation. He regularly used a device that stimulates bone growth, took calcium pills and drank gallons of milk. Friday, an X-ray showed the crack was gone and his foot to be healed. Gordon was cleared to play."
