Vegas RB Prospect Akil Sharp

The speedster is 5-9 and 189-pounds and his performance this summer is garnering recruiting attention. Akil Sharp, from Las Vegas (Nev.) Sierra Vista, has a unique goal: to achieve a GPA higher than his 40-yard dash time...

Las Vegas (Nev.) Sierra Vista running back Akil Sharp (5-9.5, 189), is a prospect we saw for the first time in March at the Badger/New Level Passing Tourney in his hometown.

The shifty back had an excellent day, earning First Team all-Camp honors after helping Nevada into the playoffs of the tournament.

Sharp has had good performances everywhere he's gone throughout the spring, but he's waiting for the elusive first scholarship offer. Still, he's not too worried.

"I'm ok with it, I know it will come when it's supposed to," said Sharp. "If I continue to work hard and make sure to work 110% in academics and athletics, I'll be ok. I'll keep working on my part and keep pushing to make it to the next level."

Sharp is encouraged, though, by the handful of schools who have stopped by the Vegas campus to check him out.

"Stanford came by and UCLA is coming out this week and UNLV is coming by," said Sharp. "I'm hearing a lot from those schools, plus Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Princeton, Boston College, North Carolina and Duke."

Sharp said he was wide open, but said that UCLA, UNLV and Stanford have been schools that have piqued his interest.

"UNLV, I speak with them a lot and they're obviously up there because they're an up and coming program and they're close by," said Sharp. "But I still want to open up my range and not limit it to where I'm living. That's why I like Stanford and UCLA, because I'm looking at schools that are good academically and athletically."

Some schools have looked at Sharp as a corner, but he prefers to play offense.

"Running back is my best position," said Sharp. "My ability to break tackles, that's just another element I have. I know I have to play bigger because of my size, so I just go out there and out-work you."

Sharp had an outstanding showing at a combine the day before the Badger/New Level Camp, recording the best overall numbers on the day.

He's run a 4.4 forty consistently and has a unique goal when it comes to his forty and GPA.

"My goal was to make sure my 40 time was either the same or below my GPA. I have a 4.419 GPA right now, so I want to get a 4.41 or lower forty time," said Sharp.

And he'll get another shot at that in two weeks when he attends the Under Armour/ Combine in Phoenix. The Scout Combine will be just one of the numerous camps he's planning to attend, with stops at UCLA, Stanford, Cal, North Carolina, USC, Boston College, Duke and Princeton all on the schedule and some unofficial visits in the works too.

In the meantime, Sharp said he'll just continue to work to get the first offer.

"Once I get the first offer, we'll see what school it is, then we'll break down the school, and see how much this school is going to benefit me the most. I want to find a school that's going to accentuate both my athletic and academic talents," said Sharp.

With his 4.4 GPA, Sharp scored a 1430 on the SAT.

During his 2007 junior season, Sharp rushed for 1,255 yards on 247 carries and scored eight touchdowns to earn all-league and all-state honors.
