Elite OL Has Four Favorites

Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood's John Martinez, the #3-ranked offensive guard prospect in the nation, said he has four schools that currently top his list, and he talks about taking official visits to them...

John Martinez, the 6-foot-3, 270-pound four-star offensive lineman from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, says he now has around 28 scholarship offers with some of his latest coming from Notre Dame, Washington, Arkansas and Georgia.

Scout.com's No. 3 offensive guard still just slightly favors USC and LSU over UCLA and Ohio State. The race seems a little tighter now.

"But I'm still pretty open," Martinez added. "I'd say they are all pretty even right now, but I just know more about LSU and USC."

He's already scheduled an official visit with the Tigers for October 25 when they take on Georgia. "I like the coaches at LSU and the whole team is great," he said. "I think if I went there I'd be able to learn a lot and really get a lot better. I think I'd be able to make a difference there.

"I like coach Les Miles," he said. "He's cool. We talked about his son and how he plays baseball and just talk about life and stuff.

"He says he really likes my nastiness at o-line and how I never take a play off."

Martinez will be attending the LSU camp in July and he also plans to camp at Ohio State, USC and UCLA.

"I really like USC," Martinez said. "I'm curious to see how they are going to do next year after losing to Stanford and Oregon last year. I talked to coach Pete Carroll about that and he said it's not going to happen again. He seems very upbeat about the season and I think they'll have a good year. I can see them maybe losing only one game."

Martinez also admits he's curious about the Trojans' cross-town rival as well. "I really like coach Rick Neuheisel," he said. "I've talked to him a few times and he says that they need o-linemen and that if I went there they'd prepare me well for the NFL. He said I could probably get to the league.

"UCLA has a really good ball club and I like the tradition there," he said. "They should have a pretty solid season, but I'm sure it'll take some time before they get back to the top."

Martinez says he won't make a decision until after his senior season. "I want to play in a good environment and have a great relationship with all my coaches," Martinez said. "I've already narrowed down my list and I'm really comfortable with these four.

"I'm really leaning towards staying closer to home and on the West Coast, but I want to go out and visit Ohio State and see what it's like and see if I change my mind about going away.

"I've never been to Ohio State and I know they've got a great program," he said. "I like that they have good tradition and they keep making it to the national championship, so they must be doing something right."

Martinez said that LSU is the only school in the South he'd considered going to. "I'm just so comfortable with LSU and really like all the coaches," he said. "I have the feeling that I could have a great career and future if I went to LSU."

A few of the other schools that have already offered Martinez are Arizona, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Miami, Kansas State, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, BYU, Utah and Colorado.

Martinez says he wants to major in journalism. He reports a 3.0 core GPA and an 18 ACT.
