Week One kicks off this week in California, with still several schools a week away from beginning their season. With UCLA's bye week, the coaching staff will be out at numerous places watching the prep action.
Game of the Week: Bishop Amat at Los Osos
UCLA's committed quarterback Richard Brehaut will get a chance to challenge his future Bruin teammate, cornerback Sheldon Price, when he leads the Grizzlies against Amat. A third Bruin commit, linebacker Isaiah Bowens, plays for Amat, but is still sidelined with a leg injury. Los Osos also has a prospect UCLA is scouting in lineman Matt Shinn while Brent Seals will continue to make a case for an offer from the Bruins playing linebacker for the Lancers.
Monrovia at Arcadia
Bruin commit Todd Golper leads the Apaches in this rivalry game against Monrovia. The linebacker verbal will also play running back for Arcadia in this game, but its on defense where he'll be the best player on the field.
Arroyo Valley at Pasadena
UCLA target Michael Philipp will be in action with a new quarterback behind him when AV takes on Pasadena in their season opener.
Long Beach Wilson at Inglewood
Two of the top receivers on the West Coast will face off when Shaquelle Evans and Inglewood face Jemari Roberts and Wilson. Both had big games against each other last year, though they never matched up. Both had long touchdowns, Evans on a couple of catches, Roberts on kick returns.
Esperanza at Corona Santiago
In one of the best non-league games of the weekend, Esperanza, the pick in the Sunset League, visits Corona Santiago. The Sharks have a number of UCLA recruits on their team, though none have been offered. 2010 quarterback Brandon Connette makes his season debut behind center and expect tight end Marlion Barnett to be heavily involved in the offense. In the secondary, Sean Martin and Sean Murray will pace the Sharks.
Fremont at Rancho Verde
Rancho Verde features a handful of UCLA recruits, notably running back Daniel Jenkins and tight end Terrence Miller. They'll host City Section Fremont, coach Pete Duffy's former school.
Poway at Scripps Ranch
Fresh off a commitment to Michigan, Tate Forcier leads Scripps Ranch with tight end recruit J.T. Kerr and 2010 running back Brennan Clay against Poway, the defending CIF-San Diego Section champions, and 2010 safety Brent Thomas.
