Friday Football Preview: Week One

All seven of UCLA's commits are in action this weekend, as well as most of their targets, with a couple of intriguing matchups featuring commits and targets against each other, as well as one featuring a current Bruin verbal and a former Bruin pledge...

Week One kicks off this weekend in the Golden State, with all schools now ready to begin their season. Here is a look at games involving UCLA commits and recruits.

Game of the Week:
Arcadia at St. Francis
UCLA commit Todd Golper had a big week in the opener, rushing for over 100 yards and 12 tackles. This week, he and the Apaches will visit area rival St. Francis, which features junior Dietrich Riley, one of the top 2010 prospects in the West, who also has a UCLA offer.

Los Osos at San Bernardino Cajon
A few months ago, this looked like a game that would feature two Bruin commits, Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut and Cajon cornerback Marlon Pollard. But with Pollard decommitting from UCLA and committing to Notre Dame, that went out the window. So now Brehaut and Pollard will match up as high school rivals turned college prospects going their separate ways.

Mission Viejo at Redondo
After a two-week layoff, the Diablos return to the field. Mission won their opener out in Hawaii, thanks to three touchdowns from Bruin commit Alex Mascarenas, who caught a pair of touchdown passes from Cal-bound Allan Bridgford and also returned a punt for a score.

Corona Centennial at Temecula Chaparral
The Huskies, one of the top five teams in California, hit the field for the first time since their state championship loss to De La Salle and will face the high-powered Puma offense. Ricky Marvray, the UCLA committed receiver, figures to be Nebraska-bound Taylor Martinez's top target with Arthur Burns set to replace Ryan Bass. The best battle, though, will be in the trenches where the state's best defensive tackle, Will Sutton, faces Oregon-commit Trevor Fox, who plays guard for the Pumas.

Visalia El Diamante at Bakersfield West
El Diamante features UCLA commit Greg Capella up front, the anchor of one of the best lines in California and running back Stefphon Jefferson behind them. They'll face West, who features mammoth lineman David Born, who has interest in UCLA, in the season opener for both.

Orange Lutheran at La Puente Bishop Amat
UCLA commit Isaiah Bowens is still out with a leg injury but UCLA verbal Sheldon Price and recruit Brent Seals will have to stop the Lancers offense, which should be one of the best in the Southland.

Pomona Diamond Ranch at Ontario Colony
This may feature the best 1-on-1 matchup of the weekend in cornerback Brandon Sermons of Diamond Ranch against top 2010 receiver prospect Kenneth Scott of Colony. Sermons already has a UCLA offer while Scott camped at UCLA this spring and could be an early offer candidate.

Inglewood at Narbonne
The West's top receiver, Inglewood's Shaquelle Evans will go up against the talented Narbonne secondary, featuring onetime UCLA commit and current USC verbal Byron Moore and 2010 prospect Sean Parker.

Gardena Serra vs. Carson
One of the best intrasectional matchups of the weekend's features City section power Carson, who nearly beat Mater Dei a week ago, taking neighboring Gardena Serra on. Morrell Presley, the nation's top tight end, will be a tough matchup for Serra. Meanwhile, Serra features elite 2010 receiver Robert Woods, who'll matchup with sleeper corner Chris Hill.

Los Angeles Loyola at Palos Verdes
The Cubs, for years, were a fertile recruiting ground for UCLA, and though they haven't produced much top-end talent the last few years, they have a pair in the 2010 class that the Bruin staff has already offered, running back Anthony Barr, who rushed for over 200 yards last week, and tight end John Young. They'll face Palos Verdes in their final test before hooking up with Concord De La Salle next week.

Van Nuys Birmingham at Encino Crespi (on FSN at 7:30 p.m.)
The stakes aren't as high this year as they were a year ago, when a Crespi win kept Birmingham out of the state championship game. This time, the Celts are the heavy favorites, led by junior quarterback Bryan Bennett, senior receiver Kevin Cummings and junior lineman Hroniss Grasu. Birmingham is paced by senior receiver Devon Flournoy and junior running back Trajuan Briggs.

Other UCLA Offers in Action
Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino and lineman Michael Philipp will be at Hemet West Valley. San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathederal and running back Dasarte Yarnway visit Pittsburg. San Diego Cathedral and running back Tyler Gaffney host Point Loma. Las Vegas Silverado and Keenan Graham will face Las Vegas Centennial in a battle of unbeatens. Oaks Christian and tight end Christopher Coyle will play Pasadena Muir.

Other UCLA Recruits in Action
San Jose Bellarmine Prep and linebacker Michael Clay and lineman Kevin Danser visit San Jose Oak Grove and safety Jabari Carr. Verbum Dei travels and tackle Noel Beckles travel to Torrance North. Crenshaw and 2010 LB Hayes Pullard, DE Nick Alexander and CB Marcus Andrews visit Norco.
