Friday Football Preview: Week Two

Among some of the UCLA-related games this weekend include the one tonight televised on Fox Sports, with UCLA-committed wide receiver Ricky Marvray and Corona Centennial facing traditional powerhouse Mater Dei and USC-committed quarterback Matt Barkley...

Here is a look at games involving UCLA commits and recruits in Week Two of the prep football season.

Game of the Week: Corona Centennial at Santa Ana Mater Dei (on FSN at 8:30 p.m.)
Last year, these two teams combined for over 1,300 yards in a 51-37 Monarch win. Both received tests in their first games, Mater Dei needing overtime to beat Carson and Centennial needing a late touchdown to hold off Chaparral. Centennial's Ricky Marvray, a UCLA commit, caught a touchdown pass last week and he figures to factor into this game heavily. The Monarchs are led by Matt Barkley, and he's protected by 2010 lineman Chris Ward, who UCLA has already offered.

De La Salle at Loyola
The Spartans are the defending state champions but they needed everything to break their way a week ago, including a 2-point conversion late in the game to beat San Mateo Serra. Meanwhile, Loyola looks to be fully back under Jeff Kearin, thanks to all-everything 2010 prospect Anthony Barr, who boasts an offer from UCLA. John Young, another 2010 prospect with a UCLA offer, will play both tight end and defensive tackle and try to stop Arizona commit Kylan Butler.

West Covina at La Puente Bishop Amat
Fresh off a stunning win over Orange Lutheran, the Lancers return home for the first time this year when they face West Covina. UCLA commit Isaiah Bowens is still out with a leg injury but UCLA verbal Sheldon Price and recruit Brent Seals are ready to keep momentum on their side. Seals had a big night last weekend, scoring three touchdowns.

Mission Viejo at La Costa Canyon
In a key intersectional matchup, La Costa Canyon, one of the top three teams in San Diego, hosts Mission Viejo, in a pairing of unbeatens. UCLA commit Alex Mascarenas has had a good season so far, scoring four touchdowns on offense, while anchoring the Diablos secondary.

Golden Valley at Visalia El Diamante
El Diamante ran for over 300 yards and had 450 yards in total offense last week, thanks largely in part to UCLA commit Greg Capella, who had four of the five touchdowns Stefphon Jefferson scored come off of his blocks. They play at home for the first time when they host Bakersfield Golden Valley.

Pomona Diamond Ranch at Ontario Colony
Diamond Ranch will have their work cut out for them when they visit top-ranked Oaks Christian. UCLA target Brandon Sermons will likely match up with Brian Owusu for the Lions, but expect Christopher Coyle, the Lions tight end, to be on the receiving end of several Nick Montana passes.

Anaheim Servite at Encino Crespi
Crespi will host Servite in a rematch of their memorable semifinal game a year ago, where Bruin freshman E.J. Woods scored the winning touchdown in overtime to beat the Friars. This time around, both schools come in 2-0, and while Servite doesn't have the talent they had a year ago, they may be a more complete team and have shown it in wins over defending Central Section champion Clovis West and CIF-SS Western Division champs St. Paul. The Celts are led by junior quarterback Bryan Bennett, senior receiver Kevin Cummings and junior lineman Hroniss Grasu. Servite is paced by senior cornerback Bijon Samoodi and lineman Anthony Ferraro.

Other UCLA Offers in Action
Gardena Serra and 2010 receiver Robert Woods visit San Gabriel. Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino and lineman Michael Philipp host Rialto. Crenshaw and 2010 LB Hayes Pullard, DE Nick Alexander and CB Marcus Andrews visit Fontana A.B. Miller. San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathederal and running back Dasarte Yarnway visit Antioch Deer Valley. Las Vegas Silverado and Keenan Graham will face Henderson Liberty. Reno McQueen and LB Kyle Van Noy host San Mateo Serra.

UCLA Recruits/Commits Off this Weekend
Arcadia and LB Todd Golper have a bye before facing Lynwood next week.
Los Osos and QB Richard Brehaut have a bye before taking on Vista Murrieta in a week.
