Surprise Prospect to Visit

A football recruit from Louisiana is heading back to his roots this weekend when he will take an official visit to UCLA. Find out more about this hard-hitting safety prospect...

Chris Horton, 6-2, 190, 4.48, New Orleans (LA) De La Salle, is making a real name for himself as a senior and seeing his recruitment pick up because of it.

He's put up some great stats, on a team that went 2-8 for the season.  "We are not real strong. We're not like the De La Salle team in California that never loses. But this season I had 86 solo tackles, 31 assists, four sacks, 12 caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one hurry, 21 caught behind the line, one interception and four pass breakups. I only played on offense in one game this season. I caught one pass for eight yards."

The scouting report on Horton this season is he's a big-time hitter with a great nose for the ball, and he is now considered one of the best safety prospects in the south.  He is being recruited primarily for safety, but if he fills out he may end up as a linebacker. "I played like a rover/strong safety this year. I played in the middle, on the outside and in the free safety position."

Horton also runs track. He is a quarter-miler and runs the 400 and 4x400 relay. "I have a personal best of 49.12 in the 400 and a 48.1 split in the relay," he said.

Horton has been hearing more and more from some pretty big-named schools, and offers, he says, are starting to come in.  His first offer was from Tulane, and then, Monday night, UCLA offered. He also said that Arkansas has mentioned that they expect to offer him very soon. "I'm hearing a lot from those schools and from LSU, Nebraska, Colorado and Wisconsin. I don't really have a favorite school right now."

Horton will take his first official visit, to UCLA, this weekend. And it's a bit of a homecoming for him. Horton lived in Southern California until his family moved to Louisiana when he was twelve. Interrupting an in-home visit by the Tulane coaches, Horton wanted to talk about his official visit to UCLA. "I'm coming out there (Los Angeles) this weekend for an official visit, and I'm really looking forward to it. I have an aunt there who is going to try and come see me. I grew up in Inglewood and Hawthorne," he said.

As far as other official visits, Horton has two other visits arranged so far. He is heading to Arkansas on January 10th and Tulane on January 17th.

The UCLA offer came via a telephone conversation between Horton's mother and UCLA cornerback coach R. Todd Littlejohn. "She asked him if UCLA was offering, and he said yes. We were all real excited. I wasn't around to talk to coach Littlejohn. I am waiting for him to call me back tonight [Tuesday]."

Horton has a qualifying core GPA, and is taking the ACT on December 14.
