Friday Recruit Preview: Week 14

Seven of UCLA's commits in the class of 2009 will be in action this weekend, one in the JC State Championships, three in the CIF Finals and three more in an all-star game on Friday night between top players from the Mainland and top players from Hawaii/Polynesia as the prep football season winds down...

Here is a look at games involving UCLA commits and recruits in their CIF finals games as well as an all-star game in Hawaii.

Game of the Week: Mainland vs. Hawaii All-Star Game on FSN Prime Ticket at 10 p.m. on Friday
The newest All-American Game to show up is an intriguing one matching up the top players in the country against the top players from Hawaii. But the Hawaiian team also features several players with Polynesian ties, who aren't necessarily from Hawaii, making this an interesting format that should be fun to watch.

The Hawaii/Polynesia team has several players of interest to the Bruins, including three commits: offensive lineman Stan Hasiak from Kapolei and Punahou teammates Roby Toma and Dalton Hilliard, though Hilliard is nursing an injury suffered in last week's state championship game.

Also playing for the Hawaii/Polynesia team are several recruits UCLA is after like Manti Te'o from Punahou, John Martinez from Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood and Xavier Sua-Filo from Provo Timpview. Two Californians are on the roster, quarterback Corey Nielsen from Cerritos Gahr, who's committed to Hawaii, and Steven Fanua, a linebacker from Milpitas who just committed to Cal.

The Mainland team has two players UCLA has recruited rather heavily, one being Charles Siddoway from Eugene Sheldon, who has the Bruins in his top three, as well as Shaquelle Evans, who UCLA had a lot of interest in before he committed to Notre Dame.

Randall Carroll, a USC commit from Cathedral, and Jemari Roberts, a Stanford commit from Long Beach Wilson are also on the roster.

The game will be televised on Friday night at 10 p.m. on FSN Prime Ticket.

Corona Centennial at Temecula Chaparral
Combined, these two teams are 25-1, the only loss suffered by either team coming to Chaparral, who gave Centennial their toughest game, in the opener, before losing. UCLA commit Ricky Marvray set the school record for receiving touchdowns a week ago and he and Arthur Burns, a commit to Washington State will be the keys for the Huskies tonight, who are playing for a berth in the state bowl games next week. Chaparral is led by Oregon commit Trevor Fox.

Covina Charter Oak vs. Pomona Diamond Ranch at Mt. SAC
Charter Oak, who already defeated Diamond Ranch, earlier in the year. Diamond Ranch is paced by UCLA commit Brandon Sermons while Charter Oak boasts stud junior running back Adam Muema.

Visalia El Diamante vs. Tulare Union
Led by UCLA commit Greg Capella and a running game that features Stefphon Jefferson, Visalia El Diamante is in its third straight CIF-Central Section title game. They lost in 2006 but won it in 2007, 63-14 over Tulare Union, who they'll face tonight. Tulare Union is led by running back Jontell Reedom, one of the leading rushers in the state.

Tesoro vs. Long Beach Poly at Angel Stadium
The Jackrabbits, the top seed in the Pac-5 playoffs, are playing for a berth in the state championship bowl game in the Open Division, while Tesoro is playing for a spot of their own. The Jackrabbits have been here before numerous times, winning 17 section titles. Tesoro has won in the lower divisions, but never before on the biggest stage. Poly is led by UCLA recruits Iuta Tepa and Stanjarivus McKay while Tesoro features Boise State commit John Michael Davis and budding star Preston King. The game will be televisd on FSN Prime Ticket on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Gardena Serra vs. Oaks Christian
This game may have the most D-I recruits on the field of any game this weekend, with the stars of this contest mostly underclassmen. Oaks Christian, led by its vaunted junior class that features UCLA recruits Erik Kohler, Zac Stout, Nick Montana and Malcolm Jones faces the unbeaten Cavs, who boast UCLA offeree Robert Woods and George Farmer. There are some solid 2009 prospects too, such as Oaks tight end Christopher Coyle and Serra safety Anthony Carpenter, defensive tackle Sione Tuihalamaka and running back Carl Winston. But this may be a preview of the 2009 CIF championship game as well.
