Antwuan Smith's Situation

The committed wide receiver prospect from Clovis, Antwuan Smith, was supposed to come to UCLA this winter quarter. Here's the latest on him given the UCLA coaching situation...

Antwuan Smith, 5-11, 180, 4.47 Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan, is preparing for finals this week at Fresno City College. Regardless, BRO woke Smith up to get the latest information from him regarding the coaching change at UCLA.

UCLA wasted no time in contacting Smith once Bob Toledo was fired as head coach. "I got a call from Kelly Skipper on Monday night. He basically just said that coach Toledo was not with the team anymore, and he wasn't sure who was going to fill his position. And everything as far as me still going to UCLA is fine. He just wanted to make sure I knew that. I have no interest in changing my plans. I am going to UCLA."

Smith will spend the holidays with his family, then said he is heading down to Los Angeles. "I'm coming down on January 4th. I have to stay in the dorms, but I don't know who I'll be rooming with yet." All freshmen are required to live in the dorms, then they may move out of the dorms prior to their sophomore season.

As BRO reported last month, Smith took the SAT exam on October 12, and it usually takes two-and-a-half to three weeks at a minimum to receive mailed results. However, scores are posted on the Internet as soon as they are released. Smith's mom, Jerri Jackson, kept a daily ritual of scanning the SAT site until the results were posted. Her efforts paid off when she saw the qualifying score.

While the coaching staff had earlier hinted that it would be unlikely Smith would redshirt, he must now wait and see if that opinion holds when a new head coach takes over the program. Smith is a tremendous athlete both as a wide receiver and a kick returner. He may get early playing time on special teams where he averaged more than 30 yards per kickoff return.
