UCLA Adds White to the 2009 Class

Lester White, the 6-2, 200-pound safety prospect from Riverside (Calif.) J.W. North, talked to us about verbally committing to UCLA, when he intends to sign his NLI, whether he'll greyshirt or not, and all the other details of his commitment to UCLA...

Riverside (Calif.) J.W. North safety Lester White was disappointed he couldn't sign an NLI on Wednesday, but the blow was softened when he had a conversation with the UCLA coaches later in the week.

"I talked to Coach (Wayne) Moses and Coach (Rick) Neuheisel and they offered me a scholarship to UCLA," said White. "I committed to UCLA. I'm a little bummed that I couldn't sign but I'm still excited."

White said once his SAT score comes in and is reviewed by UCLA, an NLI will be sent to him, at which point he'll sign.

He said: "At first, I didn't think it would work out that I could go to UCLA because my interest level and theirs was different. But they were really interested and I wanted to stay close to home, that was a really big reason. I was pretty relieved when they offered me. It was around late last week, like Thursday, when I talked to Coach Moses and he and Coach Neuheisel told me what they wanted to do."

White said that discussion about greyshirting took place but that it isn't a done deal. "I don't think it's set in stone that I'll have to greyshirt, I could come in the fall if everything works out," said White. "But if I have to greyshirt, that's alright."

White never got to take an official visit to any school, but he said he's hoping to get to take at least one to UCLA before he ends up there.

"I'll get my SAT scores either the end of this week or the beginning of next week and then I'll sign. I hope I can take a visit there."

White said he was currently 6-2 and 200 pounds, but he's hoping to add some weight by the time he enrolls.

"If I can't go to UCLA this fall, I'll go to a JC and take some classes before I go there," said White. "I probably want to gain at least 15 pounds so I can be stronger but keep my speed."

During his 2008 senior season, White had 60 tackles and two interceptions. During his junior season, White had 84 tackles and five interceptions and ran for over 650 yards with 12 touchdowns.

Academically, White said he has a 3.0 GPA.
