Brandon Mebane, 6-1, 270, Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw, is verbally committed to Cal, but the door is still slightly ajar.

When asked if he'd still want to hear from UCLA if its new head coach, Karl Dorrell, called him, Mebane said, "Yeah, I think I would."

But Mebane emphasized his affection for Cal. "I do like Cal, though. That's why I committed," he said. "I really like their academic support and I like their coaches a lot."

Mebane took his official visit to Cal first, in November, and then visited Oregon and Washington this month.

Asked if UCLA had called recently, Mebane said, "No, the new coach hasn't called. And right now I don't know what I think about UCLA because I haven't talked to him and I don't know too much about him."

Mebane said right now he has no plans to take his last two visits.

The defensive tackle prospect, who had 74 tackles and 13 sacks on the season, was asked to play in this Saturday's Califlorida all-star game but will have to miss it because of a sprained ankle.
