Two Programs Go Hard for Wilkerson

The #26-ranked running back in the nation, Anthony Wilkerson from Tustin, Calif., is getting more recruiting interest all the time, but two California schools have ingratiated themselves with him, and one in particular has done well with his family...

Tustin (Calif.) running back Anthony Wilkerson (6-0, 217) is sitting on five scholarship offers, but the way the spring is going, Wilkerson anticipates that number increasing.

"I have five right now from Colorado, Stanford, Utah, UCLA and Washington," said Wilkerson. "Lately, California has been showing a lot of interest, Arizona State is showing a lot, Alabama came by a week ago and Duke called."

All of the attention for Wilkerson is coming as a running back, except for Cal, who's looking at him as a safety.

"Cal wants me at their camp to see me more so I may go up there, but I'm pretty set on running back, so we'll see. My coach is helping me send my film out to schools like Ohio State and Oklahoma."

For now, Wilkerson said the two Pac-10 schools in-state who've offered have been showing the most attention.

"I'd say probably UCLA and Stanford are recruiting me the hardest right now," said Wilkerson. "I went to both schools for a spring practice and I liked them both, they were real intense. Coach (Willie) Taggart came down from Stanford to the school and Coach (Tim) Drevno has been recruiting me since my freshman year. At UCLA, Coach (Bob) Palcic is who's recruiting me but I get e-mails here and there from Coach (Rick) Neuheisel."

Washington is also staying in the mix with Wilkerson, and his teammate, Chris Robinson, is headed to Seattle this fall.

"Coach (Nick) Holt and Coach (Steve) Sarkisian are both recruiting me pretty hard," said Wilkerson. "Chris is always telling me ‘Coach wants you up at Washington' so he's trying to get me up there."

Wherever Wilkerson ends up, he won't be announcing it anytime soon.

"I want to take some time and go through the process and take all my visits, just get to know all of the staffs at any school I'm looking at," said Wilkerson. "I'm real wide open and I'll decide probably the end of season. I'm just keeping an open mind."

Wilkerson acknowledged his family's preference is in the Bay Area. "My mom and dad really like Stanford and my uncle went there," said Wilkerson. "I know how good their academics are."

Wilkerson said the academics of the school he chooses will be a major ingredient in his choice.

"The academics and the courses that I want for what I want to major in are important. I want to be comfortable with the environment, too. And the coaching staff needs to be really strong," said Wilkerson.

Academically, he's in fine shape, with a 3.8 GPA and took the SAT earlier this month.

Wilkerson had a big junior year, rushing for over 2,300 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Right now, he said he's sitting at 217 pounds and wants to be at around 225 by the fall.
