Kerr has spent the last 10 seasons as defensive coordinator at Colorado State University.
The naming of Kerr is a bit of shock to the UCLA community. Texas defensive back coach Duane Akina had been thought to be the leading candidate. And Akina's former head coach at Arizona, Dick Tomey, was considered to be a possible consideration if Akina didn't take the job. Also having interviewed was Gary DeLoach, the defensive coordinator at North Texas. Kerr had not been mentioned before his naming today.
From the Official UCLA Release:
During Kerr's 10 years as Sonny Lubick's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the Ram defense led the conference in total defense twice and was second once and third once. The Rams also played in seven bowl games and won six conference championships during Kerr's 10 years in Ft. Collins.
In 2002, CSU compiled a record of 10-4, won the Mountain West Conference, played in the Liberty Bowl and ranked fourth in the league in total defense. Four CSU defenders were selected All-Mountain West Conference first or second team. He was also a nominee for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
In 2000, linebacker Rick Crowell was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference, the second time a Rams' player had been so honored during Kerr's tenure. He was also named the team's defensive MVP in the Liberty Bowl win over Louisville.
During his tenure at Colorado State, Kerr has coached six first-team all-conference players, including Eric Pauly (2001), Ula Tuitele (1999), Rick Crowell (1998 and '00), Willie Taylor (1997), Nate Kvamme (1996, '97), and Brian Schneider (1993). In addition, Pauly was named a second-team Academic All-American in 2001 and Tuitele (1999) and Crowell (2000) both played in the Hula Bowl all-star game.
Kerr, 49, went to Colorado State after having spent three seasons (1990-92) as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Northern Arizona. During those first two years, Dorrell was the Lumberjacks' offensive coordinator and new Bruin offensive coordinator Steve Axman was the head coach during Kerr's entire time at NAU.
In 1989, Kerr served as inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at UCLA under Terry Donahue. He spent the six previous seasons (1983-88) serving in that same capacity at Stanford. Prior to coaching with the Cardinal, he served as the inside linebackers coach at San Jose State (1980-83).
Kerr, who was born on June 8, 1953 in Abbington, PA, began his collegiate coaching career at St. Mary's College (1979-80) in Moraga, CA. He was also previously the head coach at Pioneer High from 1978-79.
He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from San Jose State in 1975 and earned a Master's Degree in Physical Education from San Jose State in 1982. Larry and wife Tracy are the parents of two daughters: Kelly Noel (12/22/79), and Lindsey Michelle (2/4/83). Kelly recently graduated from Colorado State and was a member of the Rams' nationally-ranked volleyball team. Lindsey is a sophomore at Colorado State and plays on the Rams' volleyball squad.
