Recruiting Tidbits

Here are a number of little recruiting tidbits concerning many of UCLA's recruiting targets -- or potential targets, including info on Michael Okwo, Kyle Caldwell and a recruit who will visit officially this weekend...

The feeling when we spoke with Noah Smith, 5-11, 180, Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft, the other night was that he was leaning toward Cal.

We spoke with Craig Stevens, 6-4, 225, Rolling Hills (Calif.) Palos Verdes, Peninsula last night and his father told us he was going to Cal.

The situation with Michael Okwo, 6-1, 200, Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Mira Costa, is a promising one. We know UCLA wants him pretty badly and will really go hard to try to seal the deal. He'll come in for an unofficial visit this weekend.

It appears that Rob Lewis, 6-5, 215, Van Nuys (Calif.) Montclair Prep, will visit UCLA this weekend. The only other confirmed visit for this weekend is from Dennis Keyes. UCLA's big weekend will be next weekend.

UCLA assistant Jon Embree will be in the home of William Snead, 6-4, 215, Oakland (Calif.) Skyline tonight.

UCLA has been in contact with Chris Horton, S, 6-2, 195, New Orleans (Louisiana) De La Salle, recently.

The feeling was that UCLA did well with Kyle Caldwell, DL, 6-3, 265, 4.62, Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro, on his official visit. Caldwell has gone completely underground, impossible to reach him and the word is that he'll announce soon, as early as today.

There is an indication that UCLA could get Quintin Daniels, WR, 6-0, 180, Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola if they want him.

Matt Malele, 6-2, 280, Carson (Calif.) High, and people close to him, have been campaigning for UCLA to take him. At this point, with a few other DL prospect still very interested in UCLA, it appears that Malele is a backup option.

Josh Tauanu'u, 6-1, 260, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly, will be a longshot to qualify, the reason UCLA isn't recruiting him aggressively.

Sedrick Ellis, 6-1, 260, Chino (Calif.) High will also need to improve academically to qualify, and it could demand summer school classes. It's uncertain right now whether he'll still trip to UCLA since he verbally committed to USC.

UCLA is in the process of determining whether they can offer Junior Lemau'u, 6-5, 245, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly. The UCLA football offices will push pretty hard for the academic committee to approve of Lemau'u.

Brandon Mebane, 6-1, 260, Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw, told UCLA within the last two weeks that he remains committed to Cal. There is a possibility, though, that Mebane could express to UCLA that he might still consider them and UCLA would then recruit him again.

The rumor that Robert Meachem, 6-1, 180, Tulsa (Okla.) Booker T. Washington, has a secret verbal to Oklahoma is farfetched, according to sources close to the situation.
