Elite Georgia LB Checks Out UCLA

Tucker (Ga.) linebacker James Vaughters visited USC and UCLA on Tuesday and the talented junior received some very big news. He left Georgia Tuesday morning with 17 offers, but returned with a higher number...

Jonathan Vaughters is the father of James Vaughters and Mr. Vaughters recaps the trip here.

"I just wanted to provide a quick update on our son, James."

"James had a unique opportunity to spend the day in Southern California visiting both USC and UCLA. James had a chance to spend about 45 minutes with USC Head Coach Pete Carroll and was excited, to say the least, when Coach Carroll extended a verbal scholarship offer for James to come to USC. This makes James' 18th offer to-date, from the top schools from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and PAC-10."

"According to James, there was a lot that impressed him about USC, and not just the championship tradition they have established, but the campus life and the great things they are doing with the curriculuum at USC, specifically in the School of Business, which is where James believes he wants to focus."

"After USC, James had a chance to go across town to UCLA and visit. The UCLA staff really rolled out the "Red Carpet" "Hollywood-style" for James. He had a chance to spend time on the phone with Head Coach Rick Neuheisel and the Defensive Coordinator, Chuck Bullough and other members of the staff spent their afternoon and evening with James. UCLA presented a great campus, great academics and a football program that seems to be on the right track and gaining a lot of momentum."

"James really appreciated the opportunity to sit and chat with current Bruin players, including seniors DE Reggie Stokes, and CB Alterraun Verner, along with 2 Freshmen RB Damien Thigpen and LB Todd Golper. It was a great opportunity for James to get "smarter" about the recruiting proceess from current players."

"With both USC and UCLA, although very different from each other, both presented an impressive combination of academics, campus life and football tradition. The academic reputations of both schools are appealling to James and with his 4.0 GPA, they believe he is a great fit for their program, academically and athletically."

"Soon, it will be time to start pre-season preparation for the 2009, but before that, James will pay a visit to the U of Florida for their Friday Night Lights event on this Friday, the 24th."

Quick Notes on Vaughters: For me Vaughters is being considered early on for the top junior in the state of Georgia. He is a lock for the National 100 on Scout and he is a true student-athlete. The Tucker native could be a linebacker or defensive end on the next level at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds. He is a beast in the weight room, he is a very intelligent player on the field, and he is a team player. Vaughters is getting a lot of early pub, but he has handled it very well as he will continue to.
