Friday Recruit Preview: Week Zero

The prep football season kicks off in most places on the West Coast, with several UCLA targets in action, including a clash of titans between Lakewood and Crenshaw, two of the state's top teams, in a game that could have postseason bowl implications...

Week Zero kicks off this week in California, with still several schools a week away from beginning their season. Here is a look at games involving committed prospects and other UCLA targets.

Game of the Week: Lakewood at Los Angeles Crenshaw
The talent will be all over the place in this one, when the City's top team, Crenshaw hosts Pac-5 favorite Lakewood. The Lancers are paced by USC commit Jesse Scroggins at quarterback and fellow Trojan commit Dion Bailey in the secondary while the Cougars feature elite middle linebacker Hayes Pullard, one of UCLA's chief targets, as well as 2011 stud DeAnthony Thomas in the backfield.

Chula Vista Eastlake at Moorpark
UCLA's committed safety, Tony Jefferson, and his Eastlake squad, will visit Moorpark, the runner-ups in the CIF-SS Northern Division finals a year ago. Moorpark has some prospects of their own, including Utah-bound quarterback Brian Blechen and D-I prospect Brody Rohach at quarterback, who split duties, as well as Air Force commit Joe Frank at tackle. But Jefferson will be tested with the Musketeers two-headed monster.

Bellevue vs. Marriott (B.C.)
Bellevue, the top-ranked team in Washington in 3A, led by UCLA commit Julius Moore, play the first of three games against out-of-state opponents. Tonight they play a team from Canada before going to Houston next week to play Texas powerhouse Katy and then hosting defending Open Division champs from California, Sacramento Grant.

St. Mary's Preparatory vs. Highland Park
After dropping their opener, St. Mary's Prep, and UCLA commit Earnest Thomas, will look to bounce back against Highland Park.

Loyola at Mira Costa
Junior quarterback Jerry Neuheisel makes his debut as the Cubs starting quarterback on Friday night when they visit Mira Costa. But he'll have some talent around him, like five-star running back Anthony Barr in the backfield and tight end John Young downfield, both UCLA offer recipients. Bronson Green leads the Cubs defense at linebacker.

Chino Don Lugo at Chino Hills Ayala
Elite defensive tackle George Uko and teammate Steven Bethley will look to lead the Conquistadores to a win in their season opener when they face Ayala, who's led by Orange Lutheran transfer Ryan Orozco at quarterback.

Westlake Village Oaks Christian at Mission Hills Alemany on FSN Prime Ticket
Two of the top running backs in the state, both named Malcolm, will meet when Alemany hosts Oaks Christian. Alemany is led by Oregon State commit Malcolm Marable while Oaks has UCLA target Malcolm Jones in their backfield. Oaks has a host of committed prospects on their squad, but the best player of all may be 2012 receiver Jordan Payton, who figures to be Nick Montana's favorite target this year.

Salinas at Encinitas La Costa Canyon
Five-star receiver Kenny Stills and elite 2011 defender Ian Seau face Salinas in a cross-sectional game at home. La Costa Canyon is looking to go back-to-back in the San Diego Section while Salinas boasts lineman prospect Chandler Hubbard.

Victorville Silverado at Gardena Serra
The Three Amigos, Serra's stellar receiver corps that includes UCLA target Paul Richardson, 2011 stud George Farmer and USC commit Robert Woods, will see their first action together. New quarterback Connor Preston, a 2011 prospect, will make his first start. Defensively, UCLA offeree from the 2011 class, Jason Gibson, leads the Cavs.

Carson at Mater Dei
This contest features a pair of UCLA targets on the offensive line, Mater Dei's Chris Ward and Carson's Wade Yandall. These two teams had a thriller a year ago that went into three overtimes, but Morrell Presley and Matt Barkley are gone, and will be playing tomorrow in college games.

Thursday Action

Fresno Edison def. Clovis, 36-7
The Tigers, featuring a pair of UCLA commits in Tevin McDonald and Wesley Flowers, and another target in Rykeem Yates, had an easy time in their season opener.

Anaheim Servite def. Long Beach Poly, 30-7
Led by UCLA target Kirifi Taula, who caused havoc all night on defense, the Friars handed Poly their second worst-loss under Raul Lara.

Other UCLA Offers in Action
Los Angeles Cathedral and receiver Anthony Jefferson will visit San Gabriel. Los Flores Tesoro and lineman Sil Ajawara will welcome San Marcos Mission Hills. El Cajon Valhalla and defensive tackle Shane Pennix will host Our Lady of Good Council from Maryland. Salt Lake City Brighton and defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli takes on Hunter. Pittsburg safety Erick Dargan leads the Pirates against Sacramento Burbank. La Canada St. Francis, coached by former Bruin Jim Bonds, and now featuring UCLA target Dietrich Riley, will visit Arcadia. Moreno Valley Rancho Verde and defensive end Ronald Powell visit Los Angeles Fremont.
