The traditional start of the prep football season in California officially starts this weekend with Week One contests throughout the state. Here is a look at games involving committed prospects and other UCLA targets.
Game of the Week: Loyola at Mission Viejo
The Cubs will take on the Diablos in Orange County in a game featuring two of the more storied programs in Southern Section history. Mission Viejo is led by quarterback Dallin McEwan, who took over for Allan Bridgford and by three-star offensive tackle Michael Criste. Meanwhile, the Cubs will counter with five-star running back Anthony Barr, who's playing both way for Loyola, tight end John Young, a heavy UCLA lean, who also plays on both sides of the ball, and by junior quarterback Jerry Neuheisel, who made his varsity debut last week.
San Diego Lincoln at Chula Vista Eastlake
Two of San Diego's top prospects, both Pac-10 commits, will meet in this non-league contest. Lincoln is led by Cal commit Davon Dunn at receiver, as well as under-the-radar receiver Victor Dean, who's drawn comparisons to Nelson Rosario. Eastlake boast's UCLA's committed safety, Tony Jefferson, who starred on offense last week, but figures to see plenty of time on both sides of the ball and will be hoping to neutralize Dunn.
Bellevue at Katy
The "Clash of Champions" features the defending state champions from Texas, Katy (the school where former UCLA running back Aundre Dean played) and the defending state champions from Washington, Bellevue. The vaunted Katy running game will play right into the favor of UCLA's committed defensive tackle, Julious Moore, while the even more vaunted Wing-T that Bellevue runs could cause problems for Katy, in a game expecting 20,000 fans at Rice's home stadium.
Danville Monte Vista at Union City Logan
Monte Vista, and UCLA's committed quarterback, Brett Nottingham, kick off their 2009 season with an interleague contest at Logan HS. Nottingham is looking to pick up where he left off in 2008, when he threw for over 3,500 yards and 39 touchdowns. Cal commit Dave Wilkerson heads Monte Vista's defense at middle linebacker.
Pasadena Muir at Westlake Village Oaks Christian
The Lions, led by UCLA target Malcolm Jones, play their final tune-up before their much-anticipated matchup with Skyline (Wash.). Jones is coming off a 284 yard game against Alemany, where he played both ways, but he should get more of a breather this week, as Oaks has traditionally had little trouble with Muir.
Encinitas La Costa Canyon at Carlsbad
Five-star receiver Kenny Stills and elite 2011 defender Ian Seau visit Carlsbad in an interleague game between two of San Diego's top programs. Stills will then hop on a plane in the morning and head out to Knoxville for an official visit to Tennessee, where he'll get to see UCLA for the second straight week.
Gardena Serra at Redondo
Fresh off a 61-0 shellacking of Victorville Silverado, Serra hits the road to take on Redondo. New quarterback Connor Preston was impressive in his debut, throwing four touchdown passes, and he's got the best receiving corps in the country featuring UCLA target Paul Richardson, 2011 stud George Farmer and USC commit Robert Woods. Defensively, UCLA offeree from the 2011 class, Jason Gibson, leads the Cavs along with 2010 prospects Bene Benwikere and Devon Spann.
Carson at Fontana A.B. Miller
Carson had a big win over a Southern Section powerhouse last weekend, in beating Mater Dei. This week, they've got an Inland Empire team in their sights, in A.B. Miller, led by running back David Dash. Carson is paced by UCLA target Wade Yandall.
Anaheim Servite vs. Clovis West at Cerritos College
Clovis West is one of the elite programs in all of Central California, winning back-to-back section titles. They'll face a Servite squad, led by UCLA recruit Kirifi Taula, who downed a section champion of their own last week, Long Beach Poly, quite decisively.
Other UCLA Offers in Action
Los Angeles Cathedral and receiver Anthony Jefferson will host Glendale. Los Flores Tesoro and lineman Sil Ajawara will trip to Fountain Valley. El Cajon Valhalla and defensive tackle Shane Pennix will host Grossmont. Salt Lake City Brighton and defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli travels to Lone Peak. Pittsburg safety Erick Dargan leads the Pirates against Granite Bay. La Canada St. Francis, coached by former Bruin Jim Bonds, and now featuring UCLA target Dietrich Riley, will visit Arcadia. Moreno Valley Rancho Verde and defensive end Ronald Powell visit Yucaipa.
Bruin Commits Off this Week
St. Mary Prep, and UCLA commit Earnest Thomas have a bye this weekend after playing two to start the season. Fresno Edison and UCLA commits Wesley Flowers and Tevin McDonald have a week off as well.
