Jones Talks of Stanford Visit

Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian's Malcolm Jones, the #6-ranked running back in the nation, talks about his official visit to Stanford this last weekend, and how he's feeling about a time frame for a decision between the Cardinal and the Bruins...

Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian running back Malcolm Jones used his bye week to take in what will be his only official visit before he makes a decision.

Jones tripped to Stanford this weekend, and with an unofficial visit to UCLA taken two weeks ago, Jones has been able to spend time seeing his two finalists before making a decision.

"The trip went really well," said Jones. "I really enjoyed the visit there and seeing the campus and talking with the coaches."

Jones was greeted by some familiar faces at Stanford, with two of his former teammates playing for the Cardinal, Chris Owusu and Sean Wiser.

"Chris Owusu was my host on the trip," said Jones, who played two years with Owusu.

Freshman Terrance Brown also hosted Jones on his visit.

Having gone there unofficially during the spring, Jones said the official visit was a great experience, with spending time with the team the highlight.

"I liked just being with the team," said Jones. "I went to all the meetings and hung out with the players a lot more. That was a lot of fun."

Jones, a unique mixture of power and speed as the West's top running back, took note of Toby Gerhart's impressive performance against Washington.

"Toby is a beast," said Jones. "Up close, he's huge. I didn't think he was that big but he's a great athlete and can do something in the NFL."

In fact, a comparison can be made between the two, which Jones agrees with.

"Eventually defenders just get tired of tackling backs like us and we also have breakaway speed, so when we get in the open, we won't get caught," said Jones. "It's hard to find backs like that."

So with the trip to Palo Alto under his belt, Jones will now take a little bit of time between his two finalists.

"I haven't set a date yet but it's neck and neck between Stanford and UCLA," said Jones.

Jones and his Oaks teammates are ranked #1 in California and return to action this weekend when they face City Section foe Venice.
