Burton's Recruitment is Heating Up

Deonte Burton, the 6-1 senior shooting guard from Compton (Calif.) Centennial, didn't sign in November, and he's seeing that pay off with many programs who need guards, including UCLA, showing him interest now...

Deonte Burton, 6-1 SR SG Compton (Calif.) Centennial, is off to a terrific start this year and his recruitment has picked up as a result.

While he probably will have the ability to defend some point guards at the next level, Burton's approach to the game, as well as skill package, dictate that he'll likely play the two. He's shooting the ball much better now than he has in the past, with range to the three-point line. He's a good, not great, athlete with a solid body and fairly good quickness.

Burton told me Wednesday night that he's hearing primarily from four schools at the moment.

"UCLA, USC, Washington and Long Beach State are the main ones," said Burton.

Burton said Long Beach State is the only school that has offered to this point, but coaches from each of the other three schools have been on hand at several of his games already.

I asked Burton if any school stands out for him at this time.

"Right now, I'm liking UCLA and Long Beach State," said Burton.

Burton said he has talked with coaches at UCLA and USC about setting up an official visit, but hasn't worked out a date yet. He said he would also like to visiting Washington.

I asked him what he is looking for in a school.

"Someplace with a nice campus and good academics," said Burton. "I'm trying to stay somewhat close to home if possible, but if I have to leave then I will leave."

I asked Burton if early playing time is a big deal.

"Yes, it is," said Burton.

Burton said he's in no hurry to pick a school.

"I want to take my time and be patient," said Burton. "I want to see what else comes and choose the best option for me."

Burton said he has a 2.8 GPA.
