Brehaut: "I Think I Can Be The Guy"

The true freshman quarterback Richard Brehaut is getting increased reps in practice with Kevin Prince injured, and talked to us about how he's taking advantage of it, how much he's progressed, and more...

Richard Brehaut, the true freshman quarterback, answered questions after Monday's practice.

Not sure what Kevin Prince's status is right now, but looking at this bowl game …

‘'I just know that he can't throw right now, so, I mean, I just have to take advantage of these extra reps that I'm getting and just show the coaches the progress I've made and show them that I can do it if they do chose me to be the guy. That's all I can do.''

I would think after all you did to get here for the spring that you really need this …

‘'Yeah, yeah, I would love to be, if Kevin can't go, then if I can get a chance to show everyone what I can do, but that's going to be up to the coaches. That's not in my hands. All I can do is show them that I can be ready and they make the ultimate decision. All I can do is get my reps in practice and do what I'm supposed to do and just take care of business and then It's in the hands.''

You've obviously been gaining ground …

‘'Yeah, exactly, and these extra practices are going to do nothing but help me. It's good.''

The games that they played Kevin Craft, it was … "Well, we just don't want a lot of mistakes" …

‘'It was kind of conservative and stuff, but that's what you have to do, you have to adjust to whoever is in the game. That's all up to the coaches and that's all on their hands. All we can do is just do whatever they tell us and do it to the best of our ability and everything should work out.''

But are you sitting there thinking … "I can play an error-free game" …

‘'I was on the sidelines thinking, you know … I had the headphones on so I knew every call going in, so now I would watch and I would see the defense and I would pre-snap see what they were doing, so yeah, I was on the sidelines thinking, you know, I can do this. I think I can be the guy, no question.''

So I would think that you really want this experience to make the whole process of coming here worthwhile …

‘'Oh, yeah. I graduated and missed the second half of my senior year, but that's what I wanted to do. I wanted to be here, and so, I mean, yeah, I guess you want to see some kind of payoff and some kind of result, but to me all of the experience I got this year and the games I've played, I don't think I would have ever been even close to get in the game if I wouldn't have come early. Looking back, I have no regret at all that I came here early. It's only going to benefit me in the long run.''

So when the plan for Temple starts going in, the approach is the same, no extra pressure?

‘'Same approach as any other game, just going to treat it as any other game. We have maybe a little bit of extra time to get ready, so I'm going to take advantage of that and do everything I can to put myself in the position to succeed if I get my name called.''

Are you anticipating that happening?

‘'I would love that. I don't know that's going to happen, but if that happened, that would be awesome. I would love that.''
