Recruiting Gets Bigger for Johnson

Xavier Johnson, the 6-6 forward from Temecula (Calif.) Chaparral, one of the top prospects in the country for 2012, gives us his early thoughts on his recruitment...

Xavier Johnson, 6-6 SF Temecula (Calif.) Chaparral, is an outstanding young prospect with an extremely high upside. A bouncy lefty with the ability to play inside and on the perimeter, Johnson has a terrific feel for the game. He's got a solid stroke to three-point range and he's a great rebounder. You don't see many high school sophomores with Johnson's skill package, body, athleticism and approach to the game. With continued development, he figures to be an impact player in college right away.

I spoke with Johnson recently and asked about the programs that have been expressing interest in him so far.

"UCLA, Stanford, USC, Syracuse and Arizona are a few of the ones I'm interested in," said Johnson. "UCLA and USC have offered."

I asked Johnson if any schools stand out for him at this time.

"So far UCLA and USC because I have visited them and those are the ones I've had the most contact with," said Johnson.

Johnson talked a little about the factors that will influence his choice.

"Education is the most important thing," said Johnson. "I want to have something to fall back on. Even if I end up playing in the NBA, I want to have a good education to fall back on. I'd like to be able to come in and play right away. And the chance to win at a high level is a big deal."

I asked Johnson if location will play a role in his decision.

"Someplace where the sun shines," said Johnson. "I don't reallly like the cold, but I am open to anything right now."

I asked Johnson if he has a time frame for picking a school.

"I don't really have a time frame," said Johnson. "I just want to find the place where I'm most comfortable."

Johnson said he has a 3.5 GPA.
