Neuheisel also discusses the other injured and their status.
Some practice observations:
-- While there is quite a bit of mixing and matching players in first- and second-strings, there were some interesting experiments today.
Clayton Tunney, the walk-on quarterback, seemed to be getting reps at the third-string quarterback spot over Nick Crissman.
Patrick Larimore got some reps with the 1s at middle linebacker.
Sean Sheller is getting a look at left tackle, working with both the 1s and 2s Tuesday.
Dalton Hilliard worked a bit with the 1st at strong safety.
Nate Chandler got some time with the 1s at defensive tackle.
Glenn Love took snaps with the 1s at weakside linebacker.
-- There were some heated moments in the live scrimmage period, where some tempers flared. Akeem Ayers and Brett Downey got in a wrestling match, and Aaron Hester got in a trash-talking battle with just about the entire offense. It was, though, interesting to see Stan Hasiak, who had been suspended from the team due to some poor behavior, be the guy who tried to break up the fight between Ayers and Downey. Receiver Ricky Marvray also got admonished by Neuheisel for a late hit.
-- It's clear one of the goals of the new offensive alignment is to get the ball quickly into the hands of the offense's playmakers out in space. Morrell Presley is getting quite a bit of work, as is Damien Thigpen.
-- It appears that Derrick Coleman is the #1 tailback.
-- Randall Carroll is having ups and downs. He easily glided behind a cornerback effortlessly to haul in a 40-yard touchdown pass, but then dropped an easy 10-yard out.
-- Tight end Cory Harkey is becoming a more consistent receiver.
-- Walk-on tight end Kevin McDermott is getting a lot of time while Joseph Fauria is out. McDermott made a couple of nice grabs in practice. He's also more than likely the heir apparent to the long snapper spot once All-American senior Christian Yount graduates.
-- Stan McKay has had a few moments in practice at safety.
-- Receiver Jerry Johnson continues to look improved, more disciplined and focused. He caught a nice 40-yarder where he had to come back for the ball.
-- In the live scrimmage that ended practice, the offense struggled some, especially with pass protection. It did, though, create a few nice holes for running backs.
-- Milton Know probably had the two best runs of the day, bursting through the line and getting into space with a couple of nice moves.
-- While there has been some criticism of UCLA's practice jerseys, we're hearing that new jerseys will be unveiled in the fall.
Caylin Hauptmann, who went to College of the Canyons and had a good freshman season there last fall, was at practice tonight. UCLA showed some interest in Hauptmann out of high school. Brian Moran, an offensive line prospect from Northern Cal, and OL John Haupt from Placentia El Dorado were also in attedance.
