David Wear Sr. said he discussed the decision with UNC Head Coach Roy Williams Thursday and that he hoped his sons would be released from their scholarships as early as today.
Wear wouldn't provide any explanation for their departure, only saying "they didn't want to return to North Carolina."
In regard to where the twins, who completed their spring finals, might transfer to, David Wear said "when they return home (to Huntington Beach), we will sit down as a family and review their basketball and academic options."
It's a pretty fair assumption that UCLA will be considered a strong option for the 6-9, 245-pound Wears.
Wherever they transfer, they will have to sit out a year, and then be eligible to play as redshirt sophomores for the 2011-2012 season.
From Santa Ana Mater Dei High School, the Wears were McDonald All-Americans, then played sparingly at North Carolina as freshmen. Travis Wear played in 32 games for the Tar Heels, averaging 10.3 minutes, 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Travis played in 27 games, averaging 10.5 minutes, 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds before his season ended as a result of a torn labrum in his hip that required surgery in March.
