Kenyatta Smith Hears From UCLA

Kenyatta Smith, one of the top 2011 centers in the west, has been hearing lately from UCLA...

Kenyatta Smith, 6-6 C Flintridge Prep (Calif.) La Canada, is a very talented prospect and he's had a good summer. Although he's not real tall, Smith plays bigger than his size with a big body, long arms and suprising agility and explosiveness.

I spoke with Smith at the Best of Summer tourney and asked about the schools that have been recruiting him.

"Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Vanderbilt and Northwestern have offered," said Smith. "Cal has been coming pretty hard and I've had more contact lately with UCLA and Stanford."

I asked Smith about the issues he will consider when picking a school.

"A balance of academics and athletics," said Smith. "The academics are definitely an issue. The location isn't really an issue."

Smith said he isn't sure if he will take any unofficial visits or just wait until the school year begins to take official visits.

"I need to talk with my Mom about it," said Smith. "It's possible I will take some unofficals in August, but we need to talk about it."

Smith said he doesn't have a leader at this time. I asked if his Mom has any preference.

"She really likes the Ivy League schools," said Smith. "But I'm open to everyone right now."

Smith said he has a 3.7 GPA.
