Q&A With D-End DeVante Wilson

The 6-4, 235-pound defensive end prospect from Corona, DeVante Wilson, talked with Scout.com about his recruitment, having just taken another unofficial visit to UCLA's campus this week, and setting one of his five official visits...

DeVante Wilson, a DE prospect from Corona (Calif) High, answered questions from the Nebraska Scout.com site, BigRedReport.com.

How have you been? It's been about a month since we've spoken, what did you do over the summer break?

"I've been good, real good. I think I hit a little growth spurt over the summer, I weighed in yesterday at 230 pounds, and I'm up to 6-foot-5 now.

"I went to a couple camps over the summer, one to Cal, and I stopped by UCLA and Oregon for an unofficial visit. That's about it, other that that I've been laying low, working hard in the weight room to get stronger.

"We just started back to school this week, and tomorrow we throw on the pads for the first time. I'm looking forward to that. Our first scrimmage is September third, and then the next week is our first game."

What's your offer list looking like these days? And do you think some other schools could be close to offering?

"Right now I have Nebraska, Arizona, Washington State, New Mexico, San Jose State, Duke, Utah, Washington, Colorado and Colorado State. A lot of other schools seem pretty close to offering too. Like Oregon, UCLA and USC, I feel like they could offer at any time now. Oregon has started recruiting me really hard right now.

"I went up to UCLA on Monday and watched them practice, got a little tour of the campus and stuff. I talked to coach Neuheisel for a little bit. I've been to games there before, but that was the first time I got to see the campus."

Have you set up any officials yet?

"Yes, sir, I've got one set up to Nebraska when they play Texas later this year. That game will be off the chain, that's why I chose that one. I'm going to take one to Arizona, too, I just haven't chosen the game yet.

"I probably won't visit any of the California schools on officials, they are right down the road so I can get there for almost nothing. But Oregon and maybe Washington could be some other places I would take officials to."

Let me ask you this straight up, if one of those other west coast teams you're high on comes through with an offer, is your recruitment over?

"No way, I'm still making my Nebraska visit no matter who offers. It's not like that at all."

I guess you've seen on the news about Nebraska's move to the Big Ten starting next year, does that give you any apprehension about the school now?

"No, not at all, I like the move. They are going to be moving to a really good conference, and I think they are going to dominate it, to be truthful. My dad and my uncle live over in Chicago, matter of fact they are meeting me in Lincoln when I take my official visit out there. They can just drive over from their home. Now my dad would be able to come see most of my games if I go to Nebraska at home and on the road, so that's a good thing too."

What about your recruitment, are you getting any closer to naming a top 5, or do you still consider yourself wide open?

"I have been thinking about it. The schools recruiting me the hardest right now are my top five. Definitely Nebraska, UCLA, Arizona, USC and Oregon are coming at me the most. They all send me a bunch of mail every day, and I talk to the coaches the most from those schools. They all are all coming at me the hardest, that's my top five."

Have you thought anymore about a timeframe for your commitment, when do you see that going down?

"Once I take a couple visits I'll be ready to make a decision. I won't hold back, once I get through the visits I should have a decision shortly after."

Could you describe why you like each of your top five schools?

"Arizona: They were like one of my first offers, and their coaches show me a lot of love. They always try to get me on the phone and stuff. Their three top defensive ends are graduating this year, so that's good for me.

"Oregon: I like their uniforms, and the coaches from there seem to have a lot of interest in me. They have a nice campus too.

"UCLA: The campus is beautiful, they have good academics, and they have pretty good facilities. And I've got an old teammate up there now.

"USC: just the tradition, and they win a lot of games. I also liked them when I was little.

"Nebraska: Their defense is tops in the nation, and they have great coaches out there. They produce great players all the time, and really know how to develop the D-line. I know they have great fans, facilities and stuff like that, that's why I can't wait to get out there on my official."
