Friday Prospect Preview: Week Zero

The prep football season kicks off in full effect this weekend around the West Coast and several of UCLA's commits and targets are in action...

Game of the Week: Gardena Serra at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (FSN Prime Ticket at 10:30 p.m.)
The defending state champions from the CIF State D-III ranks, Serra, visit Notre Dame, who's dealing with graduation losses, including quarterback Ryan Kasdorf. Junior running back Jacob Smith and K.J. James lead the Knights but they'll have their hands full with a loaded Serra team that boasts the West's top outside linebacker Jason Gibson, California's best receiver in George Farmer and a crafty and winning quarterback Connor Preston.

Chandler vs. Peoria Centennial
UCLA's primary quarterback target, Brett Hundley, makes his final appearance as an uncommitted quarterback when Chandler faces a loaded Centennial team, featuring the West's top center, Jake Abbott and San Diego State commit at outside linebacker, Jebron Harrington.

Oaks Christian at Alemany
For the first time since 2005, the Lions won't have Malcolm Jones in their backfield, he'll be in Manhattan, Kansas, preparing for the Bruins opener tomorrow. They also won't have Nick Montana or Cassius Marsh, but they will have a still talented receiver corps in 2012 pass-catcher Jordan Payton and Duke commit Blair Holliday. It will also be the starting debut for Trevor Gretzky. Alemany's top prospect is offensive lineman Akeem Gonzales.

Locke at Lakewood
Several top prospects will headline the field for the Lancers, who make their first start without Jesse Scroggins. The Lancers are led by elite defensive tackle Todd Barr and offensively boast UCLA commit Torian White at left tackle. Two of California's top lineman in the 2012 class are featured in this game, as well as UCLA's first verbal commit in the 2011 class. Pleasant Grove trots out elite defensive end Arik Armstead, a commit to USC and Lincoln has offensive lineman Charles Howard on its side. The playmaker in this game is someone who UCLA fans should get to know, receiver Brandin Cooks, who committed to the Bruins back in the spring.
