Time for Husky Run

The UConn men's basketball team put the 2010-2011 season to rest last week with a national championship banquet, celebration and ring ceremony. Now the first sign of the 2011-2012 season will be visible on Wednesday.

The Husky Run 2011 will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. The annual 3.4 mile run through the UConn campus in Storrs marks the traditional end of offseason workouts for the men's basketball team. The public is invited to run with the players or just watch.

Registration will be held from 1-2 p.m. outside the east entrance to Gampel Pavilion. All runners receive a free T-shirt and free food following the race. The first place finisher receives a UConn Nike sweat suit.

Walk-on Kyle Bailey returns to defend his victory in the run and should be the favorite to repeat. Bailey's winning time last year was 21 minutes, 12 seconds. Forward Tyler Olander was second, just three seconds behind Bailey.

The UConn men and women will join together Friday night to welcome in the new season with First Night activities. Admission is free and open to the public. Doors to Gampel Pavilion open at 6 p.m. Both teams will hold an autograph session. The show, expected to end at 8 p.m., will include dunk and three-point contests, player and coach introductions, prizes and a performance by Simon Sez. The FanFest on Fairfield Way is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Coach Jim Calhoun, back for his 26th season at UConn, will hold his first official practice on Saturday.
