Napier Makes History

Sophomore point guard Shabazz Napier became the ninth player in Connecticut history to record a triple double Sunday when he had 22 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists in an 87-70 victory over Coppin State.

Napier played 39 minutes, hit 8 of 14 shots from the field, made 3 of 5 from three-point range, 3 of 4 free throws, had one foul, one turnover, one block and two steals. All 12 rebounds were on the defensive glass.

"I told my coaches I haven't seen a triple double in a long time, especially from a point guard," Coppin State coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell said. "I mean that tells you a lot about his heart."

Napier began the week with a high fever which turned out to be caused by a gum infection. He missed practice Wednesday after having a tooth pulled, then played Thursday against Maine, when he had eight points and five rebounds.

UConn coach Jim Calhoun summed it up best: "He is one tough kid."
