Harvard Ranked for First Time

Connecticut will be playing a ranked team Thursday night at Gampel Pavilion. That didn't seem likely when the 2011-12 basketball schedule was released and Harvard was listed as the Dec. 8 opponent.

Harvard, 8-0 under coach Tommy Amaker, moved into the Associated Press poll for the first time in school history Monday at No. 25. The Crimson is No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.

UConn (7-1) fell one spot in the AP poll and moved up one place in the ESPN/USA Today poll - and that means the Huskies are ranked No. 9 in both polls.

The Huskies defeated Harvard 81-52 last season.

Both teams played in the Battle 4 Atlantis Thanksgiving weekend tournament in the Bahamas. UConn and Harvard didn't meet but both defeated Florida State. UConn downed the Seminoles 78-76 in the consolation game. Harvard downed FSU 46-41 in a semifinal game that was tied 14-14 at halftime.

UConn coach Jim Calhoun watched Harvard and FSU battle in the Bahamas and offered this: "And both teams were trying to score. That's the scary part."

Tip-off Thursday is at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.
