Technical Talk

HARTFORD, Conn. – If you are looking for the precise moment when the momentum changed in UConn's 64-57 victory over West Virginia Monday night, it can be found in the official play-by-play sheet.

With 11:55 to play in the second half and West Virginia leading 43-36, Andre Drummond was called for an over-the-back violation, his second foul of the game. A media timeout was taken, and on the play-by-play there is the notation of a technical foul called on the UConn bench with 11:55 to play.

Actually, the T was on UConn coach Jim Calhoun, who complained about Drummond's foul call to the officiating crew until he got whistled.

"It was just a misunderstanding," Calhoun said when asked about getting hit with a T. "Those things happen."

That drew laughter from reporters in the room who had never heard Calhoun offer such a gentle explanation regarding a T.

Darryl Bryant hit the second of two free throws and big man Deniz Kilicli hit a jump shot on the possession to make it 46-36 with 11:24 left. But UConn outscored West Virginia 28-11 the rest of the game to record an important Big East victory and end a two-game losing streak.

Since the T was handed out during a media timeout, it was done with little fanfare. Many didn't know it had happened.

"I didn't even know he got it," center Andre Drummond said. "I walked out [on the floor] and said, ‘What are they shooting for?' Somebody said, ‘Coach got a technical.' I said, ‘Ooh, as usual.'

"He loves winning. He's like the rest of us, we like going out there and winning."

Drummond said he didn't foul on the play before the technical was called.

"I didn't foul him," Drummond said. "I mean, I have 7-foot-5 wingspan, man. I took the ball and they called a foul. But I wasn't going to complain to the refs. That's their call."

And that's where the coach took over.

"I told them, 'If you aren't going to fight, they may throw me out of here, but I'm going to fight,' " Calhoun said
